South Shields Quasar Laser Centre
We like to try different activities, usually so that we aren't just sitting around on a Sunday. Given that only a few of us had tried quasar laser and that many years ago, we decided to give this a whirl.
Although the place is on the sea front, it's in the amusement area so you have to keep a look out to make sure you don't miss it. However, once found, it's handy because there is lots of free parking.
We had already booked for 9 of us, and when we went into the place, we were shown to a waiting room (Quasar Control Centre) with seats all round the sides. There were other people in this waiting room, and the member of staff asked how we wanted to split the two teams; this is so that customers have the option of staying with or fighting against the other members of their group. A member of staff gave us all of the rules for playing the game and while we waited we were able to watch the computer screens which showed the teams inside the quasar area who were just about to finish.
Once the teams were decided on, we were taken Quasar Vest Room where we put on our quasar vests, - two colours of red and green. The whole time there was a member of staff ensuring we had our vests on correctly and ensuring we knew the rules. The vests are simple to put on but it is important to get them on the right way so that the packs are in the right place on the front and back. The vests are quite heavy as are the guns so it's important that children in particular ensure that they have the strap round their shoulders so they don't drop the gun.
Once we are kitted out, it's into the Quasar Arena Maze. This really is a darkened maze of walls, alleyways & bunkers, with a balcony upstairs where you can shoot down on your opponents on the floor below. It's all quite confusing when you first get in, really hot and with mirrors, windows in the walls and quests, it was certain I would get confused. At first I did find myself hiding mainly as I kept getting shot and with the box on my jacket permanently buzzing I had little choice but to find a quiet place for 6 seconds until I could shoot again. However, once I got my bearings and had orders shouted at me from team mates, it was easy to get into the whole experience.
Basically, you take a shot at a player from the opposing team. If the opponent's light is hit dead centre my gun says "good shot" and the opponent will be out of the game for 6 seconds (I seemed to be out all of the time). The object of the game is to try and shoot the flashing lights on your opposing team players pack and so win yourself some time!
Once we had finished we took off our gear and returned to the waiting area where our scores were recorded recorded on the computer, each player received an individual printout of how many players from the opposing team he or she has hit and also how many times he or she has been hit back, the printout also records which team won the game overall. Really brings out people's competitive nature!!
