A lovely cottage with space for our family of five, and a helpful owner.

A lovely cottage with plenty of space for our family of five, in two bedrooms. On a working sheep farm, with lambs to watch in the field when we were there in April.

The cottage is near a road, but there are only infrequent cars, and there is enough green space in front of the house to keep your car and children off the road.

Be aware there is not a bath, if that matters to you. Shower and sink very clean.

There is a well equipped and kept kitchen with oven, hobs, microwave. Spacious table to sit at. Plenty of cupboard space for food, also under stair space for coats and extra storage.

The walking is great, with Rannerdale Knotts just behind the cottage and other peaks accessible from there. It''s a wonderful location. I walked to Scale Force waterfall from Buttermere, and was delighted to see that Rannerdale Farm is the only building you can see from the other side the lake.

There is no mobile signal from the cottage, which you may see as a good or a bad thing!

There is a DVD player and some DVDs and games provided.

The cottage was very well kept and clean. High chair and travel cot helpfully provided.

There''s a good entrance space where you can take muddy boots off before entering the rooms - we found space for things for the five of us, and for the children''s toys in the living room.

Now reached two hundred and fifty words!

      A brilliant place to stay

We stayed here last month. We have stayed here numerous times before because we visited the Lake District every year when I was a child and we always returned to these cottages.

      Where are the cottages?

The cottages are located on a working farm (Rannerdale Farm) right on Crummock Water. They are about 2 miles away from Buttermere village.

      How many cottages are there?

There are 2 cottages which are right next door to the farmers cottage. We have stayed in both over time but recently we have stayed in the front one due to the fact that it has better views. The front cottage is called Rannerdale Close and the back one is called The Croft.

How many people does each cottage accommodate?

Rannerdale Close sleeps 5 people over 2 bedrooms with one double overlooking the lake and one bedroom with both a double and a single overlooking the farm and garden. I think The Croft either sleeps 4 or 5 people, it used to sleep 6 but I believe they have had some work done in there to move the bathroom so now there are fewer bedrooms.

      Rannerdale Close

In this review I am going to talk about Rannerdale Close due to the fact that this is the one we have stayed in the last few times we have been and therefore I have a much better memory of it. However, from what I can remember of The Croft it is quite similar in facilities and cleanliness.

Check in time for both properties is 4pm on a Saturday (holidays run Saturday to Saturday). We arrived at 3:30 and there was no problem for us to check in, my sister went to get the key and the landlady was very kind and helpful and polite, as she always is.

The cottage was spotlessly clean and I was really really impressed with this. I absolutely hate going anywhere where it is a bit grubby and I could not fault the cleanliness of this place at all, it was absolutely gleaming.

As the cottage is an old farming cottage, the facilities are not modern, however we don't mind this as we visit for the view and location rather than the facilities.

There is an LCD tv in the living room with all freeview channels, which worked fine whilst we were there. There is a 3 seater sofa and 2 chairs in the living room aswell as an additional dining chair should you need it. These sofas are a bit dated but comfortable and for the amount of time I imagine most people actually spend sat here they are absolutely fine. There is an electric fire which I imagine is essential in the cooler months. There is also an electric meter which needs £1 coins, during our stay which was over a period of a week we only put about £10 in there.

The kitchen is large and has a full sized dining table in there. There is a microwave and a cooker but no dishwasher or washing machine (however, there is a washing machine in one of the outbuildings for your use). I was pleased with how well stocked the kitchen was, there were plenty of pyrex dishes and saucepans and cutlery etc.

Upstairs there are the two bedrooms and the bathroom. The bedrooms are both of a good size and have plenty of space to put your clothes. The bathroom was gleamingly clean and has a toilet, sink and a power shower. The power shower is a good one and even with 4 of us using it each morning it didn't begin to run slow or get cold.

The landlady really does her best to make you feel at home in these cottages, there is a great deal of books in the living room for your use and she has also provided leaflets for nearby attractions. She has also left lists of services you may need eg. Supermarkets, doctors, dentists etc. In addition to this she leaves all the cleaning products in the cottage should you wish to use them during the week. We found this really useful as it meant we didn't need to buy any handwash, anti-bac spray, washing up liquid etc.

The views from the cottage are absolutely spectacular. You are right on the lake of Crummock Water and we all spent quite a lot of time just gazing out of the windows! In the morning we found the same sheep and lamb grazing on the front grass all week.

You are on a working farm but this is not a nuisance at all, there is off road parking for 3 cars (to be shared between you and the other cottage). And noise is not too much of a problem despite being surrounded by sheep, I did not find them to be noisy early in the morning or late at night.

The family who run the cottages and the farm are absolutely lovely. They have been the same family since I began visiting here aged 4 or 5 and they are all very polite and friendly. I knew that any problems we had we could go straight round and they would sort it out.

      Location of the properties

As I said, the cottages are right on Crummock Water. There are plenty of places to walk around the cottage and there is a nice route up round the back of the farm that we often walked during the evening that took around an hour and a half.

If you are visiting without a car then there is a bus service that runs, however if you do not plan on spending a lot of the week walking around the surrounding area I imagine a stay in a more populated place would be better.

The nearest village is Buttermere which is about 2 miles down the road. This is a nice walk and Buttermere is a nice place to spend the morning as you can walk round Buttermere lake. There is no shop here, but there are a couple of pubs, a restaurant and a tea room. If you are in the area, Buttermere ice creams are extremely good!

The nearest towns with supermarkets and pharmacies etc are Cockermouth and Keswick. Cockermouth is 7 miles away which takes about 20 minutes in the car and Keswick is 10 miles away which takes about half an hour.

How much does it cost to stay here and how can I book?

The rates to stay here are extremely reasonable and range from £280 a week to £320 a week. To book you will need to telephone as there is no website, the telephone number is 017687 70232.

      Would I recommend it?

If you are looking for peace and quiet and an absolutely fabulous view then definitely. More populated places are easily accessible by car and the views and walks from these cottages are brilliant. I think they are excellent value for money and would wholeheartedly recommend them. I have already booked to return in April.
