Advantages: Atmosphere, location
Disadvantages: Some facilities quite small
Me and my partner spent last week at this holiday park in Hayle, Cornwall. It is a Haven holiday park and is one of the smaller and more quiet parks, comparing it to others that I have visited before. We had a good time and will probably visit again.
*Arrival at the park*
We arrived at the park at 5 to 7 in the evening. We were glad to see that reception was still open because we had been sat in the car for over 3 hours and just wanted to relax! The lady in reception was very kind, polite and helpful. She gave my partner a map of the park which we found to be invaluable and she also wrote on it the opening times of things on the park (eg. shop, entertainment complex). She also told us about the security team which we could call if reception was not open.
*The accomodation*
We stayed in a standard caravan and quite frankly, I was less than impressed on the cleanliness of it when we arrived. Corners of the work surfaces were sticky and the toilet seat had a hair on it. Due to it being quite late I didn't bother to phone reception about it and just cleaned it myself. However, if I had phoned I'm sure they would have been quick to help. There were a couple of other problems in our caravan, for example the TV buzzed loudly and the fire would not light properly. As soon as we mentioned this to security, they immediately sent someone up to replace the TV and mend the fire. Other than that, the accomodation was fine. The fixtures and fittings were modern and there was plenty of room. The caravan did look a little tired but this could be due to it being very close to the end of the season.
*Facilities*
As with all Haven parks, there is plenty to do on site and this could keep kids entertained all week! There is an indoor and outdoor pool so perfect for all weathers, the outdoor pool has a flume but the indoor pool looked as though it could be quite boring for kids as it was just a basic pool. There is an arcade and amusement section however this is quite small. Despite this, there is still something for everyone including 2p machines, fruit machines, racing games and claw machines.
As always, they provided a packed entertainment programme with something going on every afternoon for the children and every evening. There were plenty of opportunities for children to meet the characters. The showbar was of a good size and standard and there was usually somewhere to sit. There are also plenty of things for children to do outside including a bouncy castle, adventure playground and go kart hire.
The site also provided a launderette, shop and pub. The pub provided great value meals (eg. 2 for £8.99) and was a really nice place to go. The shop was well stocked and had a number of character goodies to buy for children or relatives. The prices were actually very competetive and a number of products here were cheaper than the shops in the town.
*Location*
As I said before, Riviere Sands is located in Hayle which is a small town in Cornwall. The park is located around a mile outside of Hayle so it is very quiet and there tends to be only residents of the park about. Hayle boasts a number of shops which can provide good entertainment if you are at a loose end for a couple of hours. There are plenty of places to eat and a number of gift shops. There was also a bigger shopping complex with a Boots midnight pharmacy, huge M&S and Next. You obviously cant buy all your food from the park so there is a large co-op and Lidl nearby.
The park is set right on the beach and you can access this from two locations on the park, one down a slope and one down a step. The beach boasts 3 miles of sand and I found it to be very clean and also very quiet. It was reassuring to see there were 2 lifeguards on the beach which made it a safe place to swim.
Hayle is around a 30 minute drive from Newquay, 30 minutes from Lands End and is right next to St Ives. There is also a lot to do in Hayle including a number of museums and family attractions.
*Staff*
We spent very little time at the park as we always seemed to be out doing something, however the staff we did come into contact with we found very polite and helpful. They all seemed very keen in their job and we felt comfortable to ask any questions.
*Opinion*
Although when we first got to the park we weren't too impressed with the accomodation, we had a fantastic week. The park is definitely one of the smaller parks from Haven but did have a number of good facilities, especially for children. However, if you are looking for a park where you can easily occupy yourself all week I would recommend one of Havens larger parks such as Devon Cliffs. I really liked the fact that the park was on the beach as it gave an extra something to do for half an hour.
I believe the park is in prime location as there are so many places to visit in the surrounding area. Our week was jam packed with things to do and we had a fantastic time and did a great deal of things.
I would definitely visit this park again, but if we were taking the children I would probably only book it for a long weekend or if we had other things planned as I think they would get bored. I really liked the atmosphere of the park as it was very quiet and was perfect for a break. I felt really refreshed after the holiday and would recommend anyone to visit.
