ROKO Health Clubs has 4 clubs open at present, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Gillingham (kent not dorset!) and Nottingham. The details of which can be found at www.roko.co.uk. I believe there is also one due to open early next year in Chiswick details at www.myroko.co.uk.

I have been a member at the Bournemouth club for a few years now and it is the best gym i have been to.

They offer a fantastic range of fitness equipment and classes. There is the full range of cardio vascular equipment such as treadmills, crosstrainers, bikes, rowing machines etc. They also have a good range of resistance equipment and a free weights area to build and tone those muscles!

There are 3 studios. One designated to spinning (a cycling based class) that covers all abilities, one studio for yoga and pilates type classes and the third for higher impact stuff like Body Jam and Body Combat etc.

ROKO have a computerised personal training system called Fitlinxx, where you get given a PIN number which you log in with each time you use the club and it tells you what you should be doing in each workout. You can log into this from home and see all your efforts in the form of graphs and stuff. You also earn points for everything you do for which you win prizes!

When you join you get an hour long consultation with a fitness consultant who sets you up on all the equipment so you know what you are doing and how to do it. They will also taylor a personal programme for you if you have any specific goals like to lose weight or build muscle or even run a marathon. You also get regular reviews to make sure you are getting the best from your membership.

I lost a bit of motivation after the first few months and they even phoned me to ask where i had been and if i was ok. They said if i had any injuries they could recommend things i could do in the gym to help it! Now that is good service.

There is also a good sized indoor swimming pool, a kids pool, Jacuzzis, steam room and a sauna. They do swimming lessons kids of all ages and abilities and really make families welcome.

There are 3 tennis courts which are included in the price of the membership and about 8 five aside football pitches which i think you have to pay extra for.

There is also a bistro where you can enjoy a Costa Coffee and a cake (treat yourself after putting in all that hard work in the gym!!! They also do paninis, salads, sandwiches and kids meals. There is a patio area which is lovely in the summer as well as a sports bar.

The Bournemouth club is really clean and has a really friendly atmosphere. The staff are always welcoming and take an interest in what you are doing which is rare in a gym these days i think.

There are all sorts of membership package and prices. Peak, off peak, Family, couples, corporate etc. If you are a member of the Civil Service Sports Club you get to use the facilities at a hugely discounted price.

A single peak membership is around £50 per month which is great value as you can use all of the facilities as often as you want. If you consider the same membership with the same facilities at David Lloyd or Esporta will cost about £70 per month its even better value!

The club opens at 6.30 in the morning for all those early birds and shuts about 10pm so you can even go before or after work.

If you live near one of the clubs, check it out you won't regret it.
