Advantages: nice grounds

Disadvantages: the cost

Saltram House is a National Trust property located in Plympton, Plymouth, right near my house. I rode my bike around there today, and thought to myself that I would have to write a review. There are two parts to it, which I shall cover one by one:

1) The House
It's a Georgian house with Robert Adam interiors (the saloon is noted as the finest Adam in the country), and is famed for being the location where Sense and Sensibility was shot. It includes and arts and crafts gallery. Admission prices are:

Adult £12 child £4 family £20.

In terms of National Trust buildings, it's considered one of the best original Georgian houses in the country, but it's the grounds that really attract me.

2) The grounds
I have spent a lot of time in the grounds at Saltram. They are free to enter and use, and consist of open grassland with benches on (had many a picnic there last summer), open fields, paths and woods. Many people drive here then walk the whole route round (takes around 1 hour) or jog or cycle it. The route is part of the cycle trail in Plymouth, and is part of my daily bike ride- it's a good route made up about 1/3 of steep hill, 1/3 of gentle hill, and 1/3 of flat. The grounds are looked after daily by groundsmen, and are always neat and tidy. They are very scenic, complete with views across fields of cattle and fallen trees. There is a park (free) for the little ones, and a large pond filled with ducks to feed.

All in all, Saltram is a great place to visit, but the free use of the grounds is a good half day out, and visiting the house is optional.

Summary: worth a trip
