I can't believe that no one has mentioned this before: The Shrewsbury Flowershow.

The Shrewsbury Flowershow is the towns' only internationally famous event. Held annually first week of August in The Quarry park, it attacts blue rinse brigade from far and wide. The 2 days event hosts a mindboggling amount of flowers in oven-like tents if sunny, or a muddy battlefield when raining. It culminates in the judging of the flowers on the last day. This, for me, is the best part, as it always has the chance of an entertaining fight between the competitors. Believe me, the flower growing world is a ruthless business, full of more sabotage and steriod abuse than 10 Olympics. The best thing about the show is the fireworks at night which can be heard from about 4 miles away. If you don't fancy paying for the sight, go to The Boathouse pub garden by the Quarry bridge for a free view.

Don't think I'm being unduly sarcastic about the event- its quite an enjoyable day out, especially if you actually like flowers. Though my favourites have always been the outsize vegtables (tomatoes the size of a football etc)- wonderful examples of homegrown GM crops. But as a Shrewsbury gal I always objected to the extortionate entrance price for what is bascically walking round a field, especially when compared to the much better value West Mid Show in May.
