Advantages: A great place to get up close to some wonderful animals
Disadvantages: None really
Not content with two zoos we also visited a Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary this summer whilst on the island this summer. Much as I like zoos, I love farm type attractions where you can see the animals up really close and pet them. I've always had a soft spot for Donkeys after visiting the Godalming Sanctuary many times as a child, so when planning what to do on our hol, this was top of the list.
The sanctuary is located in Wroxall, which on the main bus route between Sandown and Ventor if like us you are plodders, for drivers it's well sign posted and there is a good sized car park.
The sanctuary is open from 10.30am daily. We visited quite early in the day, there were quite a few people there but it wasn't too busy. The donkeys were just having their breakfast in the field as you go in so we go a good view of the animals right from the beginning.
It's not a large place, though it kept us entertained for and hour or two, watching the donkeys in the fields, barn and even one wandering around amongst the visitors who was quite happy to be stroked, as a lot of them were. They are very good natured animals with wonderful characters and are very good with children, as long as they aren't too loud!! In addition to the donkeys there were a few geese, horses and a plucky little dog wandering around.
The sanctuary is set in gorgeous countryside so it's a nice place to make a morning or afternoon of it and take a picnic. There is a few refreshments for sale and a gift shop with some cute items but the focus of the staff here, of course, is caring for the donkeys and not the visitors so don't expect anything too touristy.
The sanctuary looks after donkeys that are in need of a home, through whatever circumstances and relies entirely on donations to look after them. I think it's generous to not charge a admission fee, probably to get as many people in as possible. Though, we as I hope most people do, put some money in the donation box and bought some trinkets in the shop to 'pay' for our visit.
If you are in the area and have a few hours spare, I recommend this place as great place to come for any animal lover. Spend a few of those holiday pennies on a worthwhile cause.
Summary: Answer - Don Quixote!
