We stayed at this campsite for one reason and one reason only, the reason why I imagine the majority of its guests stay there - we wanted to visit Alton Towers! The Star Caravan and Camping Park is situated just a mile away from Alton Towers making it a brilliant place to stay if you are planning a weekend there. The Star is located near Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire for those of you who aren't sure of Alton Towers exact location.
To book we simply phoned up and asked to make a reservation. It is worth noting that The Star is a family site, only couples and families are allowed and same sex groups are not allowed. When you ring up, you are asked who is in your party and then you are asked whether you would like to pay now or on arrival. When it is going to be busy (for example in school holidays) you are asked to pay in advance and I don't mind this as I prefer to pay up before so its done and we don't owe anything! We paid almost £70 for a large tent with 4 people for 3 nights (bank holiday weekend in August).
We found the park easily using our sat nav and then following the brown signs when the sat nav said we had reached our destination (we had it just programmed in to find the postcode). When we arrived my partner went into reception where he was greeted by a friendly young man who gave him some information and came out to meet the rest of us too. I thought this was a nice touch and we all felt really welcomed to the site.
We were told we could pitch anywhere on a particular field so we picked a spot we thought was best for us. The site is on a slope but to be honest we didn't find this too much of an issue. The ground was lovely and soft and the tent pegs went in really easily.
As soon as we got the tent off we headed off to Alton Towers and came back just in time to get the kids to bed and go to bed ourselves - it had been a long day! The Star state on their website they have a no noise policy after 11pm and this is my real pet hate about campsites - we have stayed at places where there have still been parties going on at 3am, the kids cant sleep and nothing is done about it. However, at The Star everything was quiet after about 10:30 and the kids both had a brilliant nights sleep. It was the same the next night and the following night. I saw the warden patrol numerous times throughout the evening which was very reassuring - especially after our last camping trip was a disaster with noisy neighbours!
The Star is quite basic, there is no swimming pool and it isn't really a place you could stay all week without getting bored. There is a decent sized kids playpark and thats about it in ways of entertainment. However, this was not a problem for us as we were only sleeping at the park.
There are two toilet blocks, we only used one as it was closer to our tent than the other but this was clean. It wasn't very modern but it was clean and well lit. The showers were also clean and the place was well looked after.
We will certainly be returning to The Star, it is quite expensive, however considering its location in comparison to Alton Towers it is just easier for us to stay here than 10 miles up the road. We found the staff to be very helpful and polite and they were all always keen to chat to the kids. Their 'no noise' policy is great for families and therefore we will no doubt be returning again next year.
