I was thrilled to find the perfect present for my daughter's sixteenth birthday- as she has always wanted to go on a hot air balloon. Her birthday fell on a Sunday and I thought it would be a special surprise to take her up on the afternoon, and therefore paid extra for a weekend-inclusive ticket. However I paid this only to find out that there were no flights on her birthday anyway. Upon booking online I could not get any flights for another month. I tried various times from three different launch sites. When I finally managed to book a flight we awoke to a bright, sunny day but no Hot Air Balloon due to 'unsuitable weather conditions.' This has now happened a number of times. I appreciate the need for suitable weather in order to take a flight but am tired of continuously rearranging my work holiday and my daughter's school timetable around Virgin. I am sure when we eventually get in the air we will very much enjoy ourselves but what was originally an exciting prospect has had all the fun taken out of it by the constant rearranging. I now just want the flight over and done with.

Summary: More tiring than exciting.

Dear Sian,

We’re sorry to learn of your distress when booking a flight for your daughter. As Virgin Balloon Flights are governed by the laws of civil aviation our pilots are unable to take-off in a passenger carrying balloon if weather conditions are deemed unsafe. I am sure you can appreciate this, as you would not wish for any family member to be flown in unsafe conditions. A natural result of this is simply that some passengers are unlucky and do not get to fly first (or more) time - what can seem like suitable weather on the ground can be vastly different at 5,000ft into the air and our pilots naturally take these risks very seriously. You are quite right in that you will definitely enjoy yourselves when you do get up in the air with us, we believe our flights and the whole Virgin Balloon Flights experience are definitely worth the wait. Good luck for your next booking and hope you both enjoy the flight.

Kind regards
