Every now and again we like to take trips around the Country to visit various members of my side of the family. As a result this results in a couple of trips a year to both the Lake District and Lincolnshire and having already camped in the Lakes this summer we decided to do the same in Lincolnshire. Having decided to camp we opted for the nearest Camping and Caravan Club Site to Lincoln, which is located in Woodhall Spa.
Booking & Cost
The process for booking a site through the Camping and Caravan Club is very simple and straightforward. There are three different methods for booking a site and all of them are very simple. We opted to use the online booking system for this trip, which we have found to be the most hassle free method to make a booking. Once you've selected the site, chosen whether you want an electric hook up and entered the size of your tent or Caravan simple click on check availability and select the exact dates you want and book.
For the weekend at the Woodhall Spa we paid £43.70, which fell during the high season and as a result our two nights were charged at peak rate. We also took up the option of the electrical hook up. At the time of booking a 25% deposit is taken to secure your pitch for your chosen dates with the balance due on arrival.
The cost broken down works out at £9.15 per adult per night as this stay was during the high season. For the rest of the year the costs work out at £8.65 in mid-season and £7.65 in the low season. The electrical connection worked out at an additional £3.55 per night.
We are now into our second year as Camping and Caravan Club members and continue to find the rates for members to be very reasonably, especially if you can find the time outside of the high season to take a trip to a club site. Should you not be a member of the club there is an additional charge on top of the nightly per adult price of £7.10, which makes membership very worthwhile as this trip saved us a total of £28.40 on the non member prices.
The other booking options are to phone the site direct on 01526 352911 and by phoning the club reservation line on 0845 130 7633.
We found this to be the hardest Camping and Caravanning Club site to find that we have been to. The usual signage from the main road didn't exist and it was only through following signs from Woodhall Spa to Kirkby-on-Bain that we stumbled across a small sign for the site at the end of a single track road leading towards the site. This was quite surprising as we have normally found that Camping and Caravanning Club sites are on the whole easy to find. The site itself is a 5 minute drive from the centre of Woodhall Spa, making it a reasonable walk back to the shops.
Upon arrival at the site the reception is located to your left in a small purpose built unit. The main entrance to the site has a barrier across, which is left open during the day and then closes at 11pm and should you miss the barrier there are parking spaces outside of the gate. This seems to be a fairly common element to Camping and Caravan club sites as the barriers are only open between 7am and 11pm.
Parking up in front of reception we were greeted by one of the site wardens and the balance of our payment for our stay was taken. We were also given a leaflet with details about the site and things to do in the local area. This included details of the visiting Fish and Chip van on a Friday night and the Butcher who visits the site on a Saturday. Once the rules of the site and the locations of the facilities were explained we were shown to our pitch on the tent field at the top of the site. There also seemed to be a field dedicated to Caravans and then the pitches into the wooded area also seem to be primarily for Caravans.
As is the case with all C & C sites, we found that during our weekend at Woodhall Spa we found that the staff on site were all very helpful and perhaps more importantly incredibly friendly. This is a fairly reasonably sized site, but it is well laid out.
As previously mentioned the site is made up of three main areas, a field for tents, a field more suited to Caravan's and a wooded area, which was certainly more suited to Caravans than tents. Our pitch was in the top field and we were given a pitch under a tree in the bottom corner of the field next to the main road.
The location was actually quite good as the majority of traffic on the road was coming to the site anyway and this kept the noise down during our stay. We had a good view from the front of our tent overlooking neighbouring fields. The pitch was a little way from the shower block, however as the weather stayed dry for the whole weekend this really wasn't an issue.
With the nicer weather the walk to the shower block wasn't too bad as this is located in the centre of the site next to the duck pond. On the walk across to the showers you have to pass one of the bin points and also a water point, meaning that all of the site facilities were within a two minute walk of our pitch. Even though we took our trip in the middle of the school holidays the site was only round half full, which made it quite a quiet break on a nice open pitch.
The toilet block was split into a male and female bathroom with a separate dishwashing and laundry area to the rear. Both the male and female sides consisted of 2 toilet, 2 washbasin and 3 shower cubicles and urinals in the gents. With the site well down on capacity, the shower rooms seemed very quiet, with no queue for the showers at any point over the weekend.
this is the first C & C site I've been to where there aren't new shower facilities, however the showers, toilets etc were all still in good working order. The only real issue was the block itself looking a little worn and tired inside. It looked like a good refurbishment of the building itself would have really lifted it considerably.
The only other main facilities on the site was the small shop, which sold the bare essentials such as tea bags and washing up liquid and for anything more a trip to Woodhall Spa was certainly required.
Having spent a weekend on this site we did enjoy ourselves. It is a pleasant site in a decent surrounding with Woodhall Spa a short drive or walk away and the rest of Lincolnshire within easy access. Despite the difficulty in finding the site and the rather dated shower blocks it is a nice site, with decent, large pitches that easily housed our tent. The camping field isn't particularly sheltered though and a lot of rain may have made a difference to our enjoyment but for the price we were more than happy with our pitch, the site in general and the location. Its not quite up to the standards of the Troutbeck of Verwood sites, but it is still a decent site that's well run and in an excellent location.
Due to the excellent value of the Camping and Caravanning Club sites we have recently renewed our membership and it's because of sites in excellent, convenient locations such as this that really make being a member of the club worthwhile and is the reason why we will continue to be members in the future.
