Lightning McQueen Lights and Sounds Car
by chrisandmark We bought our (then) twelve month old son the Lightning McQueen Lights and Sounds ride-on for Christmas last year, at the time of our purchase it was reduced in Tesco to around £20 so I picked one up as his main present - which sounds very tight I know, but as his birthday is two days before Christmas he did well over the course of the ... festive period! The ride-on is suitable for children from one year and above; David is quite a tall lad and his feet have always been able to have firm contact with the floor since he's had it, but looking at my friends dainty little girl who turned one last week I doubt she'd be as stable as her legs just aren't long enough! The car was already 'built' when we bought it, I seem to remember Mark having to push the back handle into place but that really is just a case of popping it into the two holes at the back of the car and pressing firmly downwards. No bother! Well, actually it is a bit of a bother as the back handle doesn't lock into place or anything so can be pulled out really easily - in fact we've seen it FALL out of the holes when David has turned the car upside down so it's not very secure at all! Thankfully all the stickers were already in place on the car, I say thankfully as neither me nor Mark have ever gotten the knack of applying stickers to kids toys without copious amounts of bubbles! It's all very bright and cheerful; I've never seen the Cars movies myself so can't comment on whether the stickers are true to the character you see onscreen, but they look suitably boyish and are just the kind of thing I'd expect to find on a car like this. I really like the look of this ride-on, all of my children have had similarly designed ride-on toys but none have had the 'true car' appearance that this one has - one of the bonuses of having a boy after three girls I suppose! The wheels are responsive and now, at sixteen months, David can pretty much wheel himself wherever he wants to go. The centre of balance is perfect, even when he has one of his regular tantrums while sitting on the car he's never flipped himself backwards or anything like that - it doesn't always look completely stable when he's tearing around the corners, but any time he's fallen off it's been through his own bad driving rather than any issue with the car. He has an awful habit of standing on the seat and I suspect that will be the cause of an accident at some point, obviously I move him whenever I see him but can just visualise the wheels slipping one day and him falling flat on his face! This isn't the ride-ons fault in the slightest, but I wish this type of toy would incorporate a brake for the parent to activate in case they have a 'climber' (as I seem to have). The Lightning McQueen ride-on has a panel of interactive 'instruments' below the steering wheel, which play (tinny and buzzy) music and also says 'Lightning McQueen' in a very irritating voice. The batteries came out within a couple of weeks as it's so loud and grating, there's no OFF switch that we've been able to find so coupled with the fact that the noises happen whenever the car is going forwards it quickly became a noise nuisance in the house! Despite the fact that this is listed as an outdoor toy, David uses his inside as we have plenty of room - it's certainly robust enough for outdoor play, but we have plenty of other things to keep him entertained in the garden so I can't really see the point in risking weather damage to the bright and shiny plastic. I also worry more about the 'standing on the seat' incidences outside as the wheels aren't strong enough to cope with being run around on grass so he'd need to be on the slabs to be able to ride along on Lightning, I can do without a trip to A&E with a cut head to be honest! One final point to make. If you decide to purchase this ride-on for your toddler be aware that the seat lifts up and this becomes a hiding place for just about anything that will fit. Just this week we've found the remote control, my phone, one of David's shoes, his training cup and numerous toys jammed inside the seat - we know now that if anything is missing around the house we should look inside this toy before searching the place as it'll probably be here! Quite annoying, but other than gluing the seat down I can't think of a way round it! Overall I would completely recommend this ride-on to anyone who is currently in the market to buy one. It's not particularly unisex, the design suiting boys much more than girls in my opinion, but if your little girl is a fan of the Cars characters then I don't see why they wouldn't love this - after all it's us parents who have the gender hang ups, not the kids! The current RRP is £35, which is about right for a toy of this quality (and the fact that it's a movie tie-in) - in hindsight I'd have had no qualms about paying this as David loves it and despite a gigantic toy box filled with toys of all descriptions this is definitely his favourite. Fisher Price Roll-Along Musical Pony
by HitchJo I struggle to find presents to buy for my youngest daughter due to her sister only being a year and a half older she tends to have them all passed down and at such a young age they can not tell you what they would like. At charismas I wanted to buy her something that she would be able to enjoy and what I class as a big present ... so when I was going through the sales catalogue for Littlewoods I noticed this push along pony. She was one and half at the time and was walking so I thought this would be a lovely present for her. The toy This is a pink pony that has 4 purple wheels that allow it to move along the floor. It has two green handles on the head so that the child is able to hold on and a little yellow basket on the front for the child to put toys into to play with. There is a felt like material for the tail and the mane which really sets it off. There is some detail on the toy such as the reins around its head and its eyes and cheeks either side there is also some swirl patterns on the side of the horse so that it doesn't look plain which I think makes it look pretty. This has a speaker and an on off button on the side. The cheek button makes the horse make a noise when the child wants it too. The Operation This works by the child sitting on the toy and pushing it along with their feet. When my daughter had this she seemed very scared of it and wouldn't even sit on the pony but did enjoy pressing the button. After a few weeks she did sit on it if we helped her but could only push backwards. Now she is able to get on and off the horse any push it along without any assistance and very fast may I add. The button that has to be pressed to play the music and the noises is easy to press and took a few weeks for my daughter to realise where the button was. The Music This is quite pleasant to listen to. It plays 3 songs with a horse noise between each song. This doesn't have different volumes so it can get a little annoying after it has played a few times. Summery This is a lovely little toy that is suitable for children from the age of 1 year, it may take the child some time to get used to how it operates. It is lightweight so this makes it easy for the child to manoeuvre. It was good value for money due to it being in a sale it was reduced from £25 to £11 which was a steal for me. It made my daughters Christmas too. It has different textures which makes it interesting for the child to touch and I have only seen it on internet shopping sites to buy now unfortunately but it is a very good investment and good value for money. Fisher Price World of Little People School Bus Ride On
by bush1 We wanted to get my daughter a ride on for her first birthday. She had begun to walk at 10 months so we wanted it so she could push it around herself as well as ride on it. We asked her grandparents to buy her one and this was the one they chose. ---Features of the toy: The Fisher Price Little People School Bus Ride-On ... is based around the range of Little People toys of which we have a few (see other reviews). It came in a box which does take a bit of an effort to get the ride-on out of but a pair of scissors is a useful item for this! This is a pink ride-on in the style of a school bus with a purple handle at the back which they can use to push around or be pushed on. The seat lifts up and has a small storage space under it; perfect for a toy or drink. The ride-on also has lights and sounds that are controlled by buttons on the 'dashboard' and on the top of the bus. There are also some characters from the World of Little People; 2 on the front of the bus and two under the 'dashboard'. The two on the front move with the sounds and the two inside can be pressed so when one is down the other is up. As they are pressed, they make giggling noises. The sounds that come from the bus do get very annoying after about 30 seconds of your child playing with this ride-on. The big button on the top of the bus is the main one. When it is pressed, the voice says: 'Everyone sit down, let's go to school'. It then plays an annoying song starting with 'Stop and go, stop and go...'. While this plays, the headlights on top flash red and the figures on the front of the bus spin round. There are two other buttons on the bus - one is the horn and makes beeping noises and the other just sings the song. Luckily there is the option to turn off the sound. Underneath the bus is the on off switch which allows you to still have the lights and movement but no sound. ---Our experiences My daughter really loved this when she got it. She was trying to climb on it as it came out of the box! Once we put it on the floor she was trying to sit on it and trying to move on it. At 1 year old she wasn't really strong enough to move herself so we pushed her around on it which she loved. She soon discovered that she could press the buttons to make noises so she spent a lot of time doing that. She also discovered the under-seat compartment and then kept hiding her bottle or her toys in there. As she got older she was able to push the bus around and put her toys on it. Unfortunately her favourite giraffe was not able to sit on it easily so she gets annoyed as he keeps falling off if she goes too fast around the corners. She is now 18 months old and still enjoys being pushed around on the bus, even though she is too big for this now! She will go and sit on it whenever she sees it and asks to be pushed once she's on it! She's also started to push herself round the house whilst riding on it and is enjoying the fredom with it. The only problem she has is that she can't always get round corners so we'll hear cries of 'Stuck!' every so often. ---My findings: I have been really pleased with this ride-on and am glad her grandparents go it for her. It seems to be very durable and takes the abuse of her standing on it, trying to drag it up the stairs and pushing it into walls. We've used it both indoors over the winter and outside during summer and it has stayed in good condition. The sounds on it are very annoying especially as my daughter tries to do the 're-mix' version of it and keeps pressing the buttons so it repeats the beginning of the speech every time she presses it. We therefor allow her to have the movement and lights, but we generally switch off the sound. My other bigger issue with the ride-on is that it can't be steered easily as the handles only move the wheels a very small amount. I would have preferred a ride-on that my daughter could actually ride on easily herself and not have to be helped everytime she reaches a corner. Other than these isssues, I am happy with this. ---And finally: This sells for around £30 at the moment which I think is a bit expensive for this product. I would definitely prefer a product which will allow freedom to turn and would prefer to pay the price for this instead. If you are happy with only going straight or in a very large circle then I would recommend this product. It has lasted us well and provides lots of fun and entertainment for my daughter. It states it is suitable from 12 months, but I think it would be suitable as soon as your baby is able to walk on their own if younger. Read the complete review |
