Gator Golf
by emmad5689 I bought this game for my eldest daughter for her 5th birthday as she loves playing games and I thought it would be quite a quick game that we could play with her. I picked the game up in Asda not long after Christmas and they had reduced it down to £5, you can buy the game in many places such as supermarkets, Argos, toy ... shops and online. The game has a RRP of £14.99 although it is currently just under £10 with free delivery on Amazon. The game came in a cardboard box which showed the alligator on the front, the box was very brightly coloured which of course make a young child want to look inside and the Hasbro logo was on it as they are the makers of the toy. I have also seen this game in an open fronted box which allows you to see the alligator inside but I think the full box is better as there is nothing to press or have a go of. The box states that the game is meant for preschool children of ages 3 and up. Inside the box there was a set of instructions although the game is pretty self explanatory, 2 golf clubs one in yellow and one in green, two golf balls in the same colours and then a bright orange alligator for the main part of the game. The main part of the toy is made out of very hard plastic, it is bright orange in colour with green nails marked on his feet, he has large bright white eyes and white teeth inside his mouth. There is quite a bit of detailing across the alligators back with lots of ripples for the scales. To set the top up you have to open his mouth which then puts down a little lever at the back of his tail and set him down. The balls for the game are made to look like golf balls with lots of little inverted dimples on them, the balls are made of hard plastic so that even if they are squeezed or hit too hard they stay perfectly round which is great as obviously if the balls got misshapen it would be very hard to play the actual game. The golf clubs are just the right height for my daughter who is 5 and so I would say a small 3 year old would find them too big to work with. The golf clubs again are made of hard plastic, they have the top section where you hold it a middle section for counting and then the bottom section for hitting the ball. The top section isn't smooth all the way around but open at the back which can actually hurt your hands a little when you hold it for too long or too tight. The counting section has number 0 to 4 embossed which really could have been made to stand out a little more and then there is a red piece of plastic which moves up and down over the numbers to keep your score. To play the game you have to set the alligator with his mouth open and then set it down on the floor, agree on a starting point on place the first ball down. The first player will then take a shot towards the alligators mouth and then the second player can start from the same spot. Play continues until someone gets the golf ball into the alligators mouth, this then sets off the lever at the back which flings the ball back out and then you start from wherever your ball has landed. You have to keep resetting the alligators mouth to open and then the first person to get the golf ball into the alligator 4 times is the winner. The game is quite good fun but it can go on forever if you haven't got a very good aim, when we want a quick game we play to the first person to reach two wins. The alligator can be a bit of a pain as sometimes when the ball goes in it doesn't set off the lever to throw the ball back out and sometimes it closes itself when no one has even got the golf ball inside. The game is really great quality and this has been played with many times yet there isn't any damage on the game at all. The girls even like to battle it out with the golf clubs although they are very quickly told to behave and they also like to play rolling the golf ball around the room with the golf club without using the alligator. This game is great at helping with coordination and I was quite impressed to see that my one year old can manage to hit the ball with the golf club. I would recommend this game it is good fun although you do of course need room to play it, we tend to play it inside as I don't think the balls would move too well on the grass. Sophie really enjoys the game and Emily loves cheering when one of us pots the ball. A great game and well worth what I paid for it. Read the complete review |

Hasbro Super Soaker: Soaker Wars Bottle Blitz
by superness11 My boyfriend and I are big kids really so the chance at playing with a super soaker was very appealing and took us both back to our childhood! The reason he bought this super soaker was to try and persuade the very loud, angry cats that seemed to enjoy using our back yard as a boxing ring! I don't think that he really needed to go and ... get such an expensive toy to play with when Tesco have their own water guns for half the price but I think he secretly wanted a cool soaker to play with, besides we have a niece and a nephew a piece so they can play with it when they come over. The Hasbro super soakers have remained really similar for years and I can remember playing with ones similar to this design when I was younger. This style of gun comes in either red or blue which is quite good as it means if you have two children they can have one each so they do not get mixed up. ==Price and availability== The cost of this super soaker really depends where you go, Amazon have it for £17.00 and Toys R us for £14.99, which is where he got it from. ==Description== I guess the main appeal of this super soaker is that the reservoir bottle can be swapped for any other regular pop bottle with a screw neck, this means that if you really want to get serious with the super soaker you can attach a 2 LT bottle of water and then carry some spare ammunition with you in the form of the smaller pop bottles. The reservoir at the back is a screw off bottle and has the same ridges as a regular drinks bottle. I would describe the bottle it comes with as quite cheap looking really. The bottle is came with was not neatly moulded and the ridges were a bit rough; it has the appearance of not being finished properly. It is a deep red colour which I thought may stop you being able to see if the gun is full or not but the plastic is quite thin so if you hold it to the light you can see how much water is inside. I think the main idea of the water gun is that you can use different bottles with it so that is why they only sell it with such a small cheap looking bottle. This is a really novel idea and I knew it was the main reason my chap bought it. The super soaker is quite a large gun really, with the reservoir bottle it comes with it is quite light though. It is designed to be held with two hands, one on the large grip handle and one of the pump shaft. The handle is quite big and the plastic has a bumpy texture to help prevent it slipping out of your hand. The pump shaft pulls down in a piston motion and pulls the water out of the reservoir and fires it out of the nozzle. It is relatively easy to handle, although the harder and stronger you pull the better the jet of water. There is a big difference in seeing a 7 year old, my boyfriends nephew use it and him being a grown 28 year old man. The super soaker is a mixture of red and orange and it looks quite menacing for a water pistol! ==Water water everywhere..== The super soaker can fire quite a lot of water out in the second it takes the pump to slide down the shaft. As this does this there is a small hole for air to be pulled into the reservoir so that it does not cause a vacuum; this helps keep the pump pumping freely. As the pump shaft gets closer to the main body of the gun, you need to quickly pull it back out and keep on pumping to shoot. It is impossible to get a continuous jet of water as it is piston based but if you pump quick enough you can try and maintain the shot. If you relinquish the pressure on the pump the water jet turns into a spluttering shower and depending on how the wind is flowing you can end up with a face full of water. This also happens when the reservoir is starting to empty. If you keep the water flowing, the water empties really quickly out of the reservoir. I can safely say I have never been 'shot at' with it (they know much better than that!) but it would not hurt and I am quite confident of that. It is however, truly despised by the neighbours cats who last summer had a little taste of the super soaker from the bedroom window. I am an animal lover and I have a cat myself so believe me when I say that we just wanted to stop them fighting and not upset them too much! ==Re-loading== You can change over to another bottle of ammunition really quickly. You need to hold the gun upside down, nozzle up and screw it upwards so nothing spills out. If you are using a bottle that has previously had juice or pop in it, you need to swill it out really well or the stickiness could clog up the gun and hamper its performance. Also you should avoid any bottle that has had harmful or toxic material in. We have tried the gun with a 2LT coke bottle but unfortunately it just isn't as much fun as the gun is so heavy to hold, you feel like you're are carrying a cannon! It makes the base really heavy so you need to over compensate and push up with your hand on the pump. It is not comfortable and not very fun. Not only is this, but the little tube that goes into the reservoir to pull the liquid through to the nozzle actually quite short. This means that as the bottle empties to halfway you need to tilt it downwards to allow the tube to suck up the remainder of the water. Even with one of the large 1LT bottles you struggle to get the last half of the water to be sucked up. You will have the most fun if you have a few of the 500 ml bottle water or 330 ml coke bottles. ==Overall== To sum up, this super soaker is averagely priced for a branded model and I would say that no the whole the feel of it and the build justifies the money spent on it. The only drawback to the design is the cheaply constructed reservoir bottle but this has no effect of the impact of the gun and it does not leak. The gun can shoot quite far but you really need to pump hard to try and maintain the force at the target; if you wanted a more powerful continuous jet then you should really look at the guns with triggers that allow you to pump it up first and then disperse with a trigger. Who knew the world of super soakers could be so mind boggling? This is a good toy for the money, the downside is the short reservoir tube but to be honest the larger bottles make it a little too heavy to hold in the first place. Read the complete review |

Nerf Vortex Nitron
by broxi3781 On my son's 7th birthday we ended up with a number of disasters, including a gun that didn't work. In a rush, my husband bought this for him instead. It had been on his Christmas list but with a price tag of nearly £50, I felt it was just too expensive. At £32.99, I still felt it was too high, but in rush to make sure he did have a good ... working gun on the day - I gave in. Neither my husband nor myself thought of batteries until the girl at checkout asked him if he wanted batteries with the purchase. Obviously wanting this to work, he agreed, not realising batteries were going to cost roughly £10 extra. This requires 2 AAA batteries and 6 size c batteries. As a parent - and the one who must buy the batteries, I do feel Nerf is going too far with batteries. I don't see why we can't have simple pump action toy guns, or if we must have batteries, at least a more reasonable number. For this reason - I really do not like this toy. Had I known the battery requirements - I never would have asked my husband to buy this, but of course that is my fault for not researching this better before our purchase. I had glanced at Amazon's description when in the short technical bit mentions 2 AA batteries, but this is to be expected for the light up scope. Had I read the more detailed description though, I would have known, so this oversight is my fault. But all my whinging aside - my son really loves this. His whole face lit up when he got it and he has had so much fun with it. As it has now been almost 3 months, and at least it still going with the original batteries I mellowed towards this toy a bit. I've even bought one for my youngest son - although he won't be getting it until his birthday. It didn't seem fair to allow one for one child and not the other. So what exactly makes this toy special? Well for starters it is green. That doesn't seem like a big plus - I could care less if a toy is green or yellow, but it was a plus to my son, who prefers everything green. The next issue is that this fires vortex discs rather than the standard nerf darts. My sons think these are an improvement, and they do sail nicely, even in non battery powered guns. It may also be the novelty factor, but the boys do think these discs are really the bee's knee's. This comes with an orange plastic clip with 20 discs. Extra clips can be purchased which allow for quick reloading. This would come in handy as they do fire fairly rapidly, but to date, I have not bought extras. In fact I can not find an extra 20 disc clip, even on Amazon. There is a place for an extra clip to be added to the gun though, and it would look nice. The manufacturer claims these can shoot up to 60 feet. I have never tried this as I am afraid we would never find the small green discs if this were used outdoors, and replacements are expensive. This is one area in which I feel green was not the best colour choice, as it would not making finding these in the grass any easier.Twenty discs without a clip will cost you £7.01 from Amazon, and was considerably higher in the shops we checked. It does look as if it would fire some distance though, has more than enough fire power for indoor use. I can easily believe that under the right circumstances it might reach 60 feet outdoors. Another feature which my son's feel is brilliant is the targeting system on the scope. This is really just a series of green lights inside the scope. How this is meant to help you hit a target is beyond me - and the flashing lights give me a sore head, but the children do like this. This scope slides on and off easily and can be used on standard Nerf guns as well. Or if you wish, you can put a torch from an older Nerf gun onto this one in place of this scope. Nerf does include the standard safety warning about not shooting anyone in the face. I have found the discs are extremely soft and do not hurt, even at close range, but of course you do not want a child shot in the eye with anything, so this seems like good advice. You could let the children wear plastic safety goggles though if they wish to have a no holds barred free for all. I have no problem with my sons using this indoors. It will not do any harm if it hits the TV, glass display cabinet, or anything else we own. I suspect it could be dangerous with very delicate glass ornaments that are easily knocked over - but then we don't have anything like that in out house anyway. What ornaments we do own are heavy enough not to fall over if struck by a stray dart or disc. The price on these has dropped a bit further since our purchase. This is now on for sale at both Smyth's and Amazon for £26.99. This reduction is likely due to an even newer product in the Nerf arsenal: Nerf Vortex Lumitron. This is a Nerf vortex system with glow in the dark discs and a built in ( battery powered) charging system to expose the discs to light. The discs are available separately though, and I do expect to buy some with my Amazon voucher after the next one ( my next one already being earmarked for one last birthday gift). Of course our guns will not charge the discs, but I find the idea of using battery power to shine a light on them silly anyway. We will just lay ours out under a light. I am quite tempted to knock a few stars off my rating for the amount of batteries this requires. But in all fairness - I really should have researched it further before purchasing. In retrospect, I am glad I did go ahead and buy this. I'm sure I'll be whinging again when it is time to replace the batteries, but I do appreciate that this toy was such a huge hit with my son on his birthday and is still well loved. He does say it is his very best Nerf gun ( and he has quite a few). When he got this, he was absolutely over the moon and gushed that this was his best birthday ever - in spite of all but one of his friends having to pull out on his birthday party due to illness and a custody/ visitation dispute. Of course my son is the type for whom everything is the best ever, but all the same I suppose the battery issue was a small price to pay for an item that really made his birthday. It has only been 3 months, but this toy is still used quite a lot, and I do expect it will be in use for years to come. My son has come in and mentioned that I just have to give this 5 stars, so I'll let him set the rating on this one. Read the complete review |
