~Argos Play Sand~
As you cannot have a sand pit without sand and you cannot simply bag up sand from the beach to take home for the kids to play with, this Argos Play sand is something that is relatively cheap to buy whilst being safe to handle. I have bought a number of these bags of sand in the past and found them to be fair value for money as they cost no more than £2.99 for a 15 kilo bag. Whilst I have found that one bag is not enough to create a luxurious sand covered play area, you don't always need to buy too much of this as the contents of one bag does go quite a long way (meaning that 3 to 4 bags can often be enough).
The reason that I opted for this type of sand over similar looking bags of sand that you can buy from DIY shops is that you need to ensure that the sand has been cleaned through and made safe enough for children and adults to play with. This Argos sand is guaranteed as being a non toxic product and is also meant to be a non staining sand which means it should not ruin childrens clothing. In use I have found that the sand is relatively non staining as it is easy to brush off of most types of clothing when dry, but can stick and leave a mark on clothing when it is wet. I haven't had any problems washing out clothing that has been in contact with the sand that I recall.
The colour of the sand isn't too bad with it being neither too bright and fake looking or too pale and dull. The texture of the sand that I bought seemed quite good for making sand castles and simple sand structures using buckets and spades, as well as other types of sand and beach toys. I have had this in use with water play tables as well as in a sand pit and found that it does the job in both cases well enough. The contents of the sand bags were nice and dry when opened making them ready for use straight from the pack which I was pleased about.
In my opinion this play sand does what it should and is well priced for the amount of safe clean sand that you get. Over time I wouldn't want to leave the sand out uncovered and then expect it to be clean and safe for play due to the fact that passing cats do seem to take a fancy to it. I would always leave the sand pit covered if possible and empty water from play tables after use, topping up with fresh clean water before play. As this sand is easy to handle, fun for children to play with and reasonably priced I feel it ought to get a 4 star product rating.
Summary: A safe play sand product
