Blazer Pro London Stunt Scooter
Advantages: Looks great, durable.
Disadvantages: Column worked loose very quickly.
There seems to be a huge craze for scooters these days and it came as no surprise that when asked what he wanted for a present, my 11 year old son replied "a stunt scooter". And of course, it could not be any old stunt scooter, no. As a parent you must be aware that if you buy the wrong brand your child will never be able to show his face in the neighbourhood again and will grow up bitter and twisted *cough*.
Also be aware that the top of the range brands cost silly prices. A mom at my kids' school spent a whopping £120 on a top branded stunt scooter for her little 7 year old. Eek!
Of the big brands, Blazer Pro is one of the more reasonably priced, with the average scooter setting you back about £55-£60. Pricey, yes, but only half of £120! The scooters come in lots of different colours and styles and are also customiseable, which means that you can buy accessories for them and swap the wheels and handlebars to create something unique.
My son opted for the "London Hazard" model, which is the one pictured above. It reminds me of a JCB or a wasp with its bright yellow and black striped pattern. I bought it from Amazon for £54.
The scooter came in a big box and was really easy to set up. It was just a case of adjusting the height of the handlebars and tightening the column with an allen key (supplied). Then it was ready to go. One thing that struck me about the scooter was that it seemed very solid and high quality. You get what you pay for. The handlebar column is made of quite heavy metal and there is nothing flimsy about it. Have an accident on this scooter, and you are likely to knock yourself out if you land badly!
As I have mentioned, the handlebar column is adjustable. Even the tallest setting seemed a little small, but my son assured me that this was the style! The handlebars themselves are covered in a yellow, textured rubber, which makes them comfortable to grip and ensures that even sweaty hands won't slip.
I also love the wheels on this model. They are thick and rubbery, which means that the ride is smooth. Many scooters that you see in shops have plasticy wheels that crack easily, but the wheels on this scooter are very high quality indeed.
The footplate is quite narrow, and anyone with big feet might struggle with this. It is certainly a lot narrower than a skateboard. The footplate has a grainy texture, a bit like sandpaper, which creates a good gripping surface when riding.
Just over the rear wheel, there is a curved metal plate which serves as a brake. The rider presses down on the plate, which forces the rear wheel to stop turning.
As it is a stunt scooter, the front column rotates 360 degrees in order for the rider to perform tricks. My son is trying to perfect his 360, but has not quite got there yet!
We have had the scooter for several weeks now, in which time the column started to work loose and lose alignment. It was a simple case of re-aligning the column, but I still do not think that this should have happened so soon after purchase.
My son rides the scooter all the time in the street. It reaches some pretty impressive speeds and yes, he has got the bruises to go with it!
This scooter is well designed, easy to set up, strong and durable. It is designed to last many years use. I think it was worth the money paid and has a high quality feel, so rare in childrens' toys these days. It would suit kids between the ages of 6 and 14.
All in all, a great buy.
Summary: A top-end scooter.
