Last year I bought a set of these Lazy Town Boom Bats for my middle granddaughter to play with her friend in my garden when they visit, there were plain boom bats in the shop too but her baby sister is a Lazy Town fan so I got these Sportacus emblazoned ones in the hope that she would be more entertained watching them play if the equipment featured one of her very favourite people.
The bats are very well made, the set of two bats and two balls only cost me £3.99 which I think is excellent value because they are such high quality. They are made of sturdy blue plastic with a thin plastic stretched taut in the middle, it's this which makes the BOOM noise every time you hit the ball.
The balls are rather thin plastic and one got punctured quite quickly so we're being very careful with the other one as the BOOM noise doesn't seem to work so well with any of my granddaughter's other balls.
The grip on the bat is softer than the actual bat itself which makes it comfortable to hold and means it's not going to slip out of sweaty hands and fly through my window. My granddaughter finds the bats a little small really but this is a 'one size fits all' toy which is suitable from age 3+ and considering she is ten now I think they fit rather well!
She also doesn't like the Sportacus motif on each bat and I'm wondering about the wisdom of buying this particular set, as soon as my 21 month old granddaughter realised that she couldn't hit the ball however hard she tried she decided she had absolutely no interest at all in the set. I tried to show her how to bounce the ball on the bat to no avail and after about ten seconds she threw the bat down and hasn't picked it up since!
So the older girls' are stuck with Lazy Town, and now think Nanny is getting senile.
I love the BOOM when the ball hits the bat, even when my granddaughter serves the ball softly it still produces a healthy thunderclap and when she hits the ball harder it makes such a racket (if you'll excuse the pun) that I have often thought the plastic across the bat has split but it's still in very good condition and hardly worn at all.
I've bought the girls' Boom Bats before and they tend to last the summer and that's it, not particularly because they break but they get weathered quickly and this seems to weaken the taut plastic which creates the BOOM. I find the noise gets quieter and more washed out at time goes by and this is when children will lose interest, this set is OK at the moment as it's been so cold out that the bats haven't been used much but come summer I'm sure these will suffer the same fate as all the others I've bought over the years.
Outdoor fun is guaranteed with these cool Lazy Town Boom Bats. Includes 2 bats with foam handle grip and 2 balls.
