As we live in the highlands of scotland we see a lot off snow in winter than not to mention that avimore is only 10 miles away from where we live.
Avimore has now on the hills all year round, mid july though the sun is shining , its roasting hot i can get a nice tan whitest looking at the snow covered hills yes it is very bizarre and took a while to get used too. Anyways Avimore is a holiday resort a favourite destination for winter sport fanatics due to the snow hills skiers and snowboarders are in heaven here.
Around september 2010 we decided one boring weekend to have a wee day out with all the children , josh my stepson loves Avimore so we drew straws and Aviemore it was. Whitest we were out i wanted to take the kids to the ski centre for a look around, i got sucked into letting the kids buy sledges for the mini hills specially done for young children , it is a play area and whilst its free to play you still get sucked into buying the sledges, food, arcade area and gift shop, my guess is that its been planed out nicely by the greedy resort owners. As they charges a fortune for the normal plastic sledges i allowed my kids to buy a bump and skip snow glider, being the cheapest off all at £8.99 each double the rrp price.
I have seen the bump and skip snow gliders available online at only £3.99.
The bump and skip gliders are funny looking things made of very cheap thin plastic almost look like a frying pan with a flexible handle. On the part where you sit it is bum shaped and slightly curved although these are tiny, yes my size 8 bum fitted on but was hanging over the sides made for kids bums. The bum shaped pan where you sit is quiet flat and has small grooves where each but check should go. When sitting down there is a handle that comes between your legs and flexes up so you can hold on to it. I found them to be very thin and ever little bump on the hill hurt like hell. Not only that but i was socked up both legs and even my bum was wet with cold snow. The children spent a good three hours on the gliders playing , all of them thoroughly enjoyed sliding down the hills and very fast as well due to the thin smooth plastic, the bumps did not phase them one bit.
The bump and skip snow gliders come in all different colours too so we haven't had any fighting over who's who's glider ah kids!
Since buying the bump and skip gliders they have been used a lot due to the terrible winter we had even in february 2011 we were still using the gliders. The gliders are still going strong now but this winter i will be planning a full sledge.
I cant not recommend the glider on my own experience as they are made for kids. My children has a fab time with the glider and although i thought a few uses they would be broken i have been proven wrong so will give 4 dooyoo stars from the bump and skip snow glider. If you are looking to buy this product remember your children will get socked with the snow so i would recommend water proof clothing or buy a full sledge.
My children recommend the bump and skip snow glider.
The snow 'bum sled' as I call it is a very compact and easy to use piece of equipment for enjoying hours of fun in the snow. The first thing I noticed when I bought this from my local pet shop is that it is very lightweight. The obvious advantage of this is that it will no longer be a chore lugging your new sledge about to the local park and indeed back up the hill after you slide down it! Made from robust plastic the 'bum sled' is perfect for the kids as they can carry it around with them on their own, but the one disadvantage is clear. The problem is that if you have ever been towed to school/the park etc. then this would stop with this product, as it just isn't possible to drag someone along on one, unless you are pint-sized! The strip of flexible plastic that is located between your legs is for holding unto as you slide down the hill, although it offers absolutely no control over direction - be warned!
The acid test of whether you feel comfortable on any new sledge isn't when you sit on it in the shop, it comes when you have had half a dozen runs down the slope on it! You will notice that the 'bum sled' becomes very uncomfortable over time, and your bum will ache. The robust plastic is flexible enough to accomodate all shapes and sizes (within reason!) but it is best suited to kids. I wouldn't advise adults buying it solely for their use, but it is alright for having a go when the kids lose interest.
As I mentioned earlier, you have no control over your direction and the sled is prone to spinning around as very little of the bottom surface is in contact with the snow. This does mean that you will travel very fast compared to the bulkier sledges but the ride is nowhere near as comfortable! The 'bum sled' comes in such a wide range of colours, I couldn't even begin to name them all - mine is in red.
For comfort and ride experience I feel i have to punish the scoring for that. At around £5 they are reasonably priced, and both the speed of the product and the fact it is easy to carry earns brownie points, just remember you wont be able to give your kids a ride to the park on it.
