After looking around the Argos website or some new toys for the garden I decided to use the 3 selected toys for £10 offer. One of the garden toys I purchased as part of the offer was this Chad Valley Skittles Set.
The skittle set comes in a mesh bag with a zip around the top. The product name and warnings are printed onto a piece of cardboard and that's all the packaging there is. I hate excess packaging so this was nice to see.
Inside the mesh bag are ten skittles and two balls. The size of the mesh bag means that the set has to be packed away in a certain way with the skittles alternating which way round they are facing otherwise it wont all fit back in. This can be annoying when you finish playing and want to pack them away quick as it isn't as easy as just chucking them all into a bag. Whilst it is annoying, at the same time it's good as they don't take up as much storage space when they are all packed away in the bag.
The skittle comes in three different colours, blue, red and yellow. They are roughly 10cm tall and, at the widest part, roughly 3cm wide. The skittles are nothing special to look at with the smooth curves and no detailing at all. The balls are purple in colour, these are quite big compared to the skittles, I'm finding it hard to find something relatively the same size, they are definitely bigger than tennis balls!
Both the skittles and the balls are very lightweight made from quite a thin plastic and being hollow. This has been a problem for us if we are playing with the set out in the garden, although I have a nice flat patio area, the gusts of wind we get from living so high up means that the ball just flies away after it has been rolled. Useless. I'm hoping that in the proper summer months the wind will die down so we can play with this outside again.
Inside, the skittle set fares very well. Once the skittles are all in place, they stay standing, even on uneven carpet, until the ball is thrown down at them. The large ball makes it easy for my two year old to knock down at least a couple of skittles even if she isn't aiming for the group. Sometimes she makes her own little game up with this set, I find it highly annoying sometimes! When I'm setting the game up and placing all the skittles in place, she will sneak over and kick them all over, I think she finds this more fun than actually throwing the ball at them!
When the Chad Valley skittles set is purchased on it's own, it costs £4.99, that's £1.66 more than if it is bought as part of the 3 for £10 deal. I personally don't think this set is worth a fiver. The quality of the plastic material is quite rubbish as it is so lightweight, this makes it difficult to play with outside as the ball just flies away. Saying that, we still play with it a few times a week and still enjoy playing skittles, the mesh bag is handy to keep the set in one place, it's just a pain in the backside getting all of the pieces back in. 3/5 from us!
