Disney Cars 9" Ball
Advantages: Has a good bounce, ideal for getting the kids active in the garden
Disadvantages: None really, although Hollie isn't overly impressed with the character I don't think
We live next to an aspiring young footballer, at thirteen years old he's already playing for the youth branch of one of our Midlands teams (Notts County I think, although don't quote me on that!) - Hollie is good friends with his little brother, and after going round to play a few weeks ago she came back in a huff that they have 'millions of footballs and I've only got five'. A quick look in their back garden from our bedroom window confirmed that while they might not have millions of footballs, they do indeed have lots more than Hollie has - but then this is a house full of boys so that might be expected, although Hollie obviously didn't appreciate the argument of 'but they haven't got as many Barbies as you'.
With this in mind, when I saw a basket of character play balls reduced to £1.50 in Mothercare I decided to pick a couple up - a Hello Kitty one for Hollie and this Disney Cars ball for her little brother.
The Cars ball is a 9" play ball so of a reasonable size for throwing or kicking around the garden, it's fairly tightly inflated and has an easily accessible valve in case you need to re-inflate after it's been played with for a while. After three weeks of play the ball hasn't lost any air at all and is as tight as ever, I suppose time will tell if you're ever going to need to find a pump to fit the valve - although to be honest, for this price if it ever deflated too much I'd probably just replace the ball rather than going to the bother of re-inflating it.
The design of the ball is good and would appeal to any Cars fan, obviously at sixteen months David hasn't seen the film but he does have a Lightning McQueen ride-on toy - I spotted him yesterday peering at the large Lightning piccie on the front of the ball and think he may have recognised it from his ride-on, although obviously I don't know this for sure! Still, whether he did or not I think it's good that the manufacturer of the ball has used such a central character in the design as it helps it to appeal to a wide range of children.
The ball bounces very well, better than the Hello Kitty one I bought for Hollie, throwing it hard at the ground I can get it to bounce to almost my height (I'm just over 5ft) while Hollie can bounce it higher than her despite the fact that she has such skinny arms that I doubt there's much power in any of her throws!
The Cars ball is ideal for just about any ball game you can think of. Catch, football, basketball, general 'throwing' games and anything your little ones decide they need a ball for. Hollie is currently honing her catching skills (after being laughed at in PE for missing a ball which was basically handed to her) so we've spent literally hours in the garden tossing this ball to one another during the three weeks in which we've owned it - she actually prefers this one to the infinitely more girly Hello Kitty ball I chose for her!
I'd recommend this play ball to any child really, regardless of whether they are a fan of the Cars film or not. Hollie has seen the film once and recognised the character on the ball but hasn't really shown much interest in incorporating it into Cars games as she would if it were, say, a Barbie or Pooh Bear ball. It has a minimum age of three years, god knows why as a child isn't likely to choke on this 9" ball or do any damage to themselves! The usual price is around £3 which I still think is reasonable for such a sweet looking little play ball, although I'm happy at my half price bargain as it looks like it's going to get a lot of use if the summer ever decides to put in an appearance!
Summary: A great (and bargainous) play ball featuring Lightning McQueen from the Cars film
