ELC My First Football Goal
Advantages: well made robust design great for developing football skills in young children
Disadvantages: Expensive for what it is hard to fold down
This first goal set from the ELC was a set we bought last year for our son and is still in use today. The goal is aimed at children 2 years plus and definitely fits this age group and beyond. The set includes the pop up goal, pegs an inflatable soft ball. There are also two extra bits that are curved that attach by Velcro on to the goal the aim of which I think is to help you get a better aim at the goal and to stop the ball flying past the goalie to quickly.
My son chooses this set himself and hence I had high hopes that it would be played with regularly. Setting up the goal is a matter of minutes to do and my son at 4 is more than capable of doing this himself. He can pop it up easily and add the side sections. The pegs are a bit trickier and generally either his dad or I do these. The pegs are essential especially if you are using a vinyl or similar ball as the moment they hit the goal it does tend to knock the goal over. If you are using the ball in the set it does tend to remain upright unless there is a hint of a breeze in which case it easily is blown over so again for outside use I would recommend the use of the pegs all the time.
On the top of the goal there are 3 lift up sections that have on one side a medal and the other the numbers 1 to 3. These are supposed to be turned over every time you get a goal. Depending on the age of who is playing with the goal we tend to do one of two things if it just my son and adults then we do count the goals. However if it is with his friends we use the numbers to count the shots at goal so they can take turns more easily and it helps them know how long they have to wait and the goal keeper always enjoys turning the numbers over. The Velcro that is used to display the numbers is nice and robust and the numbers always stay displayed when turned over.
The goal is a great garden toy that my son and his friends enjoying playing with and trying to score goals. He also now has his own little getting a goal dance and cheers which is very cute to watch. It is also helping him develop his football skills and he is certainly getting more accurate in his kicking skills as he tries to score and his catching skill as he tries to stop his friends getting a goal.
The goal itself is nice and brightly coloured and easy to keep clean with a quick wipe down of the material. It is surprisingly robust and even with several hefty kicks going into the back of the goal there has been no rips or damage to the goal and it does appear to be a quality product that is well made.
My only criticism with the goal is the folding of it does require a degree in origami which I don't have so when take it down after play it sits at the back of our garden toy cupboard wedged between things to stop it popping up. This is a disappointment really as part of the appeal of this is that it can be folded away rather than having a permanent goal in the garden and because of the difficult folding it I don't think it fully realises it potential as if storage is limited this may cause a problem.
The soft blow up football with the set is nice if you want to play indoors and for smaller children but it does easily get punctured as outs did and as no repair kit is included the ball quickly became redundant in our household. I would recommend keeping this for either indoor play or just for use with younger players who can't kick into near by rose bushes!
My son loves the goal and it does provide a lot of fun in garden as he enjoys practicing his football skills and I would overall recommend it. It is expensive at £20 and I do think the £10 we paid in the sale is a much more realistic price for the set because of the price and the folding difficulties I am giving it 3 stars.
