Advantages: gentle sounds

Disadvantages: nine

We have a rainmaker at work .It is a musical toy I use often with my special needs children. The rainmaker we use is from the early learning centre cost £10. There is a baby rainmaker available for£5.00.

Before you ask no it does not make it rain just sounds like rain.
The rainmaker is a clear Perspex tube with lots of coloured beads inside. When the tube is tipped or shaken the beads move and fall in the tube and make a gentle sound, at intervals there are a couple of fixed discs with small holes in them for the beads to fall through, this slows the speed of the falling beads and makes the sound gentler and last longer .The largerb£10 rainmaker is straight sided the baby rainmaker is not as long and has a narrower centre making it easy for a small baby to grip.
The baby rainmaker is suitable foe a baby aged over 3 months then larger one because of its size would be better for a baby of a year. .

The sounds the rainmaker makes are gentle and soothing. Just like gentle rain

This toy is a good cause and reaction toy you turn it and it makes a sound. We use it to encourage tracking skills we roll it along the table for the child to follow with his eyes. The sound is the encouragement. I have used this with a visually impaired child who will turn her head towards the sound. We often use this in songs where we want the children to be involved making the sound of rain.
It is very simple to use. For very tiny babies of for very disabled children just watching the coloured beads fall through the tube is good exercise for their eyes,
This is a fairly robust toy not breaking easily if it does then it is not really v safe as the beads are tiny and child may eat them
If you have a three year or older you could try making your own rainmaker by putting beads or lentils in a plastic drinks bottle.

Thanks for reading , have fun playing with your children Mary

Katie just brought one she made in the nursery (from the inside roll of foil or clingfilm), nicely decorated too; but such one wouldn't have the visual element.

I had one of these when I was little. My mum says I used to be fascinated by it!
