Hasbro Super Soaker: Soaker Wars Bottle Blitz
Advantages: you can change bottles
Disadvantages: reservoir tube is not very long
My boyfriend and I are big kids really so the chance at playing with a super soaker was very appealing and took us both back to our childhood! The reason he bought this super soaker was to try and persuade the very loud, angry cats that seemed to enjoy using our back yard as a boxing ring! I don't think that he really needed to go and get such an expensive toy to play with when Tesco have their own water guns for half the price but I think he secretly wanted a cool soaker to play with, besides we have a niece and a nephew a piece so they can play with it when they come over. The Hasbro super soakers have remained really similar for years and I can remember playing with ones similar to this design when I was younger. This style of gun comes in either red or blue which is quite good as it means if you have two children they can have one each so they do not get mixed up.
==Price and availability==
The cost of this super soaker really depends where you go, Amazon have it for £17.00 and Toys R us for £14.99, which is where he got it from.
I guess the main appeal of this super soaker is that the reservoir bottle can be swapped for any other regular pop bottle with a screw neck, this means that if you really want to get serious with the super soaker you can attach a 2 LT bottle of water and then carry some spare ammunition with you in the form of the smaller pop bottles. The reservoir at the back is a screw off bottle and has the same ridges as a regular drinks bottle. I would describe the bottle it comes with as quite cheap looking really. The bottle is came with was not neatly moulded and the ridges were a bit rough; it has the appearance of not being finished properly. It is a deep red colour which I thought may stop you being able to see if the gun is full or not but the plastic is quite thin so if you hold it to the light you can see how much water is inside. I think the main idea of the water gun is that you can use different bottles with it so that is why they only sell it with such a small cheap looking bottle. This is a really novel idea and I knew it was the main reason my chap bought it. The super soaker is quite a large gun really, with the reservoir bottle it comes with it is quite light though. It is designed to be held with two hands, one on the large grip handle and one of the pump shaft. The handle is quite big and the plastic has a bumpy texture to help prevent it slipping out of your hand. The pump shaft pulls down in a piston motion and pulls the water out of the reservoir and fires it out of the nozzle. It is relatively easy to handle, although the harder and stronger you pull the better the jet of water. There is a big difference in seeing a 7 year old, my boyfriends nephew use it and him being a grown 28 year old man. The super soaker is a mixture of red and orange and it looks quite menacing for a water pistol!
==Water water everywhere..==
The super soaker can fire quite a lot of water out in the second it takes the pump to slide down the shaft. As this does this there is a small hole for air to be pulled into the reservoir so that it does not cause a vacuum; this helps keep the pump pumping freely. As the pump shaft gets closer to the main body of the gun, you need to quickly pull it back out and keep on pumping to shoot. It is impossible to get a continuous jet of water as it is piston based but if you pump quick enough you can try and maintain the shot. If you relinquish the pressure on the pump the water jet turns into a spluttering shower and depending on how the wind is flowing you can end up with a face full of water. This also happens when the reservoir is starting to empty. If you keep the water flowing, the water empties really quickly out of the reservoir. I can safely say I have never been 'shot at' with it (they know much better than that!) but it would not hurt and I am quite confident of that. It is however, truly despised by the neighbours cats who last summer had a little taste of the super soaker from the bedroom window. I am an animal lover and I have a cat myself so believe me when I say that we just wanted to stop them fighting and not upset them too much!
You can change over to another bottle of ammunition really quickly. You need to hold the gun upside down, nozzle up and screw it upwards so nothing spills out. If you are using a bottle that has previously had juice or pop in it, you need to swill it out really well or the stickiness could clog up the gun and hamper its performance. Also you should avoid any bottle that has had harmful or toxic material in.
We have tried the gun with a 2LT coke bottle but unfortunately it just isn't as much fun as the gun is so heavy to hold, you feel like you're are carrying a cannon! It makes the base really heavy so you need to over compensate and push up with your hand on the pump. It is not comfortable and not very fun. Not only is this, but the little tube that goes into the reservoir to pull the liquid through to the nozzle actually quite short. This means that as the bottle empties to halfway you need to tilt it downwards to allow the tube to suck up the remainder of the water. Even with one of the large 1LT bottles you struggle to get the last half of the water to be sucked up. You will have the most fun if you have a few of the 500 ml bottle water or 330 ml coke bottles.
To sum up, this super soaker is averagely priced for a branded model and I would say that no the whole the feel of it and the build justifies the money spent on it. The only drawback to the design is the cheaply constructed reservoir bottle but this has no effect of the impact of the gun and it does not leak. The gun can shoot quite far but you really need to pump hard to try and maintain the force at the target; if you wanted a more powerful continuous jet then you should really look at the guns with triggers that allow you to pump it up first and then disperse with a trigger. Who knew the world of super soakers could be so mind boggling? This is a good toy for the money, the downside is the short reservoir tube but to be honest the larger bottles make it a little too heavy to hold in the first place.
Summary: A good fun water gun
