A cheap plastic colourful play set for beach or sand pit

Matalan Beach Bucket Set This has to be one of the best bargains around. At £3 for the entire set of plastic coloured bucket with various and toys inside I think this takes some beating for entertainment and value. The set comes in the bucket which is a lovely bright red sort of square shape At the base of the bucket are turret shapes so when you tip the sand out if you have the consistency right you will get a nice castle shape. In the bucket you also find a small spade and rake, I think there were three small sand moulds and a very small watering can. These are not standard sized items but are made for younger children and ideal for and pits, I would say a child under five is the age aimed at with these. I bought this set last year for my granddaughter to play with in her sandpit. She has a range of yogurt pots and spoons and so on but I thought she might enjoy having a proper castle shape and coloured toys. Her sandpit has different coloured sands in it - now all mixed together into a nice purple colour. The set has been used to create 'cakes' from the moulds and these are then offered around for pretend eating. The watering can doubles as a tea pot for times like this. I have to say the moulds are pretty small and they are tricky to recognize what they are meant to be in sand unless you have seen the original shape. They are a star fish, a seahorse and a crab but rather simplified. The watering can is used to actually water the tomatoes my step daughter has growing and because the can is so tiny it occupies her for some time, transferring the water from a bucket to the can the carrying the little watering can to the tomato plants. Sand and water toys are great for hand eye coordination which comes from pouring and filling. You can also get a lot of language from playing with these, how many yogurt pot to fill the bucket? How many sand castles can you make? Which is bigger/smaller? Can you find the stone hidden in the castle? Comparing different castles, how quickly can you fill the bucket from the watering can? How many watering cans do you need to fill the bucket? This set can be lots of fun with both water and sand and does not necessarily need a beach, you can as I have described use it with a sandpit in the garden. The set can easily be washed to clean it up though ours doesn't get washed often. Ours has been in the sandpit for a year now as I bought it last year. It has been played with constantly by my granddaughter and her friends. I didn't think they were that strong but obviously they have lasted as when we went over for a meal last week my granddaughter was playing with her sandpit and the bucket and bits were still there and more or less complete. The only thing that has broken is the bucket handle which is made of a softer plastic and didn't manage to stand up to the hard use given by my granddaughter and her friends. I would say that this set is great value for money and is great for the beach, sandpit and even for the padding pool as the bucket and watering can can be used for pouring activities in there too. For the price I pad I am more than happy with the amount of use that my granddaughter has had from this. Thanks for reading. Advantages

        Disadvantages

This set is very good and has given my children a lot of fun

WHAT IS IT? A set of beach toys that come packed into a bucket from Matalan the clothes shop. WHAT IS IN THE SET My bucket is red with a blue handle, it is square with a shape at the bottom so that when you make a sand castle it is in the shape of a castle with turrets and towers.  The bucket is not very big but it is ok for small children even though my daughters look a little bit too big for it now after I bought it 2 years ago.  Inside the bucket there is a spade and sand fork, these are both very small and more for toddlers than older children.  There was also 2 sand moulds in my set and a tiny watering can.   WHAT I THINK I did not pay very much money for this set and I bought 2 for each of my daughters when we went on holiday.  One of the sets has all broken or been lost so that all we have got left is the bucket but the other set is still complete except for one of the sand moulds that was broken when my daughter trod on it while we was on holiday. The bucket is made of very thin plastic and I am shocked that neither of the buckets have broken.  I think the spade and fork are also thin but the plastic is folded over to make the handles and that helps to stop them being damaged.  You have to be careful with how the moulds are played with because they are small and can be easily broken, they make good shapes in the sand and I think there are different selections because both of my daughters have got a clam shell mould but one has got a seahorse and the other bucket had a starfish but that was the one that broke. We have used these a lot at the beach in England and taken them to Italy also.  They have lasted good I think even though things have been broken in play, they should not be used by children who are under 3 years but that is silly and my 13 month old daughter plays with ours and the size is more suitable for her than her big sisters.  I think it would be too small even for some 3 year olds. My children used these play sets in the mud patch when we went home to Italy recently and it is very thick mud so one of the sand rakes snapped, they have been good always in the sand but I think the mud was too heavy.  The sand moulds work good in mud as well as sand but children get very dirty when they are packing wet mud into small moulds.   ANYTHING ELSE I paid only £2 for each set and I remember it was at the end of the summer because I put them into the shed for a long time and they were not used.  I bought 5 lots and gave some to children who came with us to Brighton last summer when the weather was hot.  I think it is good value  because things like this I think will last for one summer only and we still have a lot of the pieces left and in good condition that have been used for 2 summers now. 4 Dooyoo Stars.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A great addition for the beach

As we stay just down the road from the beach whenever the weather is nice we try to pop down for a visit and make the most of it being so convenient. This means we have had many different buckets and spades as my children either loose a piece or just fancy something a little different so when I saw these buckets in our local Matalan on sale for £1 each I decided to pick them up a bucket each. With the set you receive the bucket itself but it also contains a number of moulds and accessories inside to make your beach visit complete. The bucket itself is a fair size and can hold all the accessories inside easily so great for storage. It is made from durable plastic and it is moulded perfectly to represent castle turrets and all and I often find some of the cheaper sets are just a round bucket that you pick up in shops next to the beach for nearly double the price. It has a handle on it for ease of carrying the bucket around which is great as my children like to search the beach for shells before they build their castle and this makes it a lot easier to carry. It can easily hold sand and wet sand ready for making a castle and once in use the finished product is very satisfying for children who can then go on to use the other accessories to make their castle complete. There is also a spade of course for digging the sand up and placing it in the bucket and it really does work well the end of the spade is not huge and can only hold a small amount of sand but this does not seem to bother my children it adds to the fun and they take their time making the castle perfect. There is also a rake in the set this probably got the least use out of all the items they like to mark a fort around there castle with this but that is about it we have taken the set to the beach a few times without this item and the children did not notice at all. In the set we also received 3 different sand moulds a crocodile, a crab and sea horse again each is a fair size made out of plastic and a perfect size for little hands to hold. They only require a small amount of sand to fill them up and although the impressions do not come out perfect and you can hardly see any of the small details from the mould and it looks more like a blob of sand than anything else my children really think this are a fun addition. They are something a little bit different to what we have received in other sets and so they are very happy with their new additions to the set. We brought these last October when they were on sale for the winter and since then have made a good few visits to the beach where they have lasted really well and proved to be a great hit. They have also been used at home with our sand and water table and my children like to pretend they are at the beach. They are bright in colour a great size to be both practical to use for little hands and produce a decent size castle and a great addition for a day out to the beach. My only downside is the handle is not made of the same durable plastic as the bucket to make it nice and soft for little one to hold. It is great that it blends and flexes to provide more comfort for little one but this also makes it feel really flimsy and when the bucket is filled to the top with sand as this is rather heavy it can feel like it is about to snap not that it has of yet. The regular retail for this bucket set is £3 which for the durability and time it lasts we think is a rather good price. It can easily be washed down and is it is made of plastic this brings it up as good as new and it can handle a bit of rough play which is great when it is being used by young children. I would definitely recommend this set to anyone that has a Matalan nearby and are taking a trip to the seaside.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          Great toy

I totally stumbled across this product as Matalan is not a shop I visit very often however stocking up on cheap clothes for a family holiday and priced at an amazingly cheap £3.99 it was an obvious purchase as you get six items in the set and it is ideal for beach, sandpit and paddling pool play. Also at that price if an item is lost or left at the beach it is not a disaster as they are easily replaced if needed, we have already lost the nozzle from the watering can which is a shame. As well as the watering can there is a castle shaped bucket, a spade, a rake and two animal shaped moulds, a crocodile and a hedgehog. These latter two items are the most disappointing of the set, they are not very well made in terms of shape but at the price I paid it is hard to complain. Theya re all made of plastic and brightly coloured, they are strong enough for little hands to use but will probably not survive any robust play. My little one loves to use these in her sandpit when the weather permits. The castle shape is pretty good, certainly better than I expected as the turrets are clearly visible and the spade is of a nice size with for little hands. This set is ideal for the under fives in my opinion and my daughter seems to really like playing with the rake to make patters in the sand and to draw circles around the sand animals that she creates. She struggles with the bucket when full and needs help making the sand castles, we have a division of labour system, she adds most of the sand, I flip the bucket and then she does the tapping and we do the lift and reveal together, it is a system that works well and teaches her the importance of playing together and helping each other. Apart from the poor quality of the animla moulds I cannot fault this product given the price. Well worth checking out when planning a holiday to the seaside with little ones or for play in the garden.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          cheap and cheerful

Going to the seaside is brilliant fun and the British coasts are so underrated. Last summer we went to Scarborough and had plenty of fun on the beach making sandcastles and then dropping 2 pence pieces in the slot machines. My sister and I took my little niece who loved the beach and we spent a good few hours playing in the sand and then hunting for crabs. I go to Matalan on the odd occasion but always before the summer as they have a great summer collection of household items. I bought this bucket and goodies and a wonderful little picnic set. If you need anything like this for the summer, then you really need to go and visit this store. ==Price and availability== The bucket and accessories costs £3.00 which is so cheap! If you bought a bucket and spade at the seaside you would be talking at least a fiver so this is great value for money. ==Description== The bucket is very fun and designed specifically for making sandcastles. It is red plastic, quite thin but this is of the essence when making sandcastles as you need to be able to tap the sand out without breaking it. There is a yellow plastic handle at the sides that precariously takes the weight of the filled bucket. There were a few choices in regards to colour of the bucket but I could only see a red, yellow and blue one. Also in the set is a plastic spade which is perfect for small children, it will not allow you to dig to Australia but you will be able to dig a decent sized hole and carry sand to fill the bucket up. There is also a small rake so you can design the area around your castle. Also in the set is a small watering can, this is most used when the paddling pool comes out and all the bits get played with in the water. It is small and cute and a nice little addition to the set. Also included is a crocodile shaped mould and a crab shaped one. These are fun to play with although the crocodile's tail hardly ever came out right. ==Overall== In terms of fun, this set offers it all and it is perfect for beach days or playing in the paddling pool. The castle is fun as when you fill it up and tap it out, it looks very castle like and as some very pronounced turrets that stand very tall and pronounced. It takes a decent amount of sand but it does get quite heavy for little ones to carry. The cost of the set remains the same this year and the set is back out for you to buy in their summer collection, although in this year's selection in my local Leeds store, the watering can is missing and has been replaced by a bigger mould. I can't help but think this is to cut costs down and keep the price at £3.00. I still think this is a good value item for the money and would recommend it.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            A nice set

==Matalan Filled Beach Bucket== Me and my mother seem to be in Matalan a fair bit trying to source out the good stuff from the tat and the main reason for this is that it is one of the few places on the Isle of Wight where you can go and park the car in the car park out the front (which always has spaces) and walk right in. Everywhere else is either a trek from the car park or, like Marks and Spencer, has a full car park. In the spring when we were in their they had a whole ton of these filled beach buckets which were at a seemingly good price for what you got and mum decided to buy one for Jack to be kept in the boot of her car. Jack has a few buckets at out house but every Thursday mum looks after him while I am at work and when they end up down the beach she never has any of the right equipment. The bucket itself only cost £3 which isn't' too bad considering all the extra items that come inside the bucket. This price is pretty good when you look at a lot of the holiday gift shops that sell this sort of thing in the town and next to the beach which are asking a premium because they are close to the beach and praying on those who forgot to come prepared. The bucket itself is blue with a yellow handle and although not the strongest of buckets can indeed hold the wet sand filled up to the top as it needs to. The design of the bucket is just like a proper castle and the turrets are more pointed than most buckets we have previously owned. The handle is the weakest part of the bucket but like I said it has been able to take the pressure of a full bucket and hasn't broken yet. The castles that are made from the bucket are pretty good and if the right sand is used the castle comes out well and stands solid. The other items that you get inside the bucket include a mini watering can which is again a brightly coloured item and made of a lightweight plastic. This is not that great for the beach as it does tend to get blocked up rather easily but Jack has managed to not get too much sand in it after the first few times of it not working because of sand in the spout. It is nice little addition but perhaps the least used item of the set. There is one little plastic spade included which again isn't the strongest spade we have even owned but Jack doesn't have a problem with using it and the damp sand can be picked up fairly easy with it although the really wet sand does make the spade bend a little and this is not so easy to do. The other spade like item is a small rake that is made of the same plastic and is of the same strength. This is nice and chunky however and does make a good track in the sand and Jack loves playing with this the most as he them pretends to be a car and scoot around the beach following the track he has made. The last two item that you get with the bucket set are little sand moulds and the ones we have are a star fish shaped one and a crocodile one. The buckets that were on offer in Matalan all seemed to be slightly different whether it was the colours of the bucket or the design of these moulds and we thought that these two moulds would be the best for beach play and we were right. They both produce pretty good replicas of the items they are supposed to be and with the right dampness of sand can look really impressive and Jack is quite the master of making them up. All in al I must say that for £3 this bucket is really rather good. You certainly get a lot for your money even though it is not the toughest of sets it is well worth the money paid for it. Because it was such a good price it wouldn't be the end of the world if we were to loose an item from the set, which so often happens when we go down to the beach. I can't really fault the set other than it not being the strongest of buckets you can buy and I think it is only fair to mark it down one star for this aspect but other than that I would highly recommend buying the item and I would think that they will be on offer in the sale if Matalan still have a few kicking around as it is coming up to the end of the summer season for shops. So a 4 out of 5 star rating and a recommendation for this item! I do hope that this has been of some help/interest to you Many thanks for taking the time to read.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

A great water and sand toy at a fab price.

I picked this bucket set up the day before we went on our holibobs to Egypt in May this year. I don't make a habit of visiting Matalan as I don't have one locally to me and, well, I don't like it much as a store generally- it's just not my bag! However, I was pottering with my mother in law who was picking up last minute bits before we flew to sunnier climes, and I spotted this little play set hanging on the displays that line the airport style queing system before you get to the till. As I was feeling a touch of pre holiday high jinx, I thought, ah what the heck- let's live on the edge and splash out the 3 quid or so on a bucket and spade for beach time revelry. I have got a child by the way...it wasn't for myself... **What's Included?** I'm pretty sure this was £3 or a bit less, which to be honest is why I bought it, as I was going to wait until we arrived in Egypt and get one there. The odd one that I'd seen in other shops had been more than £7 which I thought was a bit of a rip off for a couple bits of plastic (that's also what my husband said when I got a boob job, but that's another story). Included in the set is a blue bucket which takes the shape of a castle (again- some of the others I'd seen were just squared off and wouldn't have made a very exciting shape). Theres a little spade and a fork for digging purposes, a hollow crocodile and dinosaur for making models with the sand, and last but not least, a little watering can. **Did My Son Play With a £3 Toy Every Day for a Week?** Yes. So I'm selling his train set, bike and garage on ebay and we're all off to the pub! Well maybe not- as we don't have a beach in our house to take full advantage of the bucket set. But crikey, what a splendid purchase this was! Every morning, he routinely gathered up his little set of plastic wonders ready for his day by the pool. He mainly played in the pool with his new favourite toys as he doesn't really like the sand too much, but to be honest, although the bucket and all its bits (with the exception of the watering can) are designed for modelling primarily, he had massive amounts of fun digging the water and drowning the dinosaur. Hours passed with him sprinkling water from the can into the bucket, and erm, pouring water from the bucket into the can. Some highlights of playtime included 'watering' Grandad and doing a bit of very sweet sharing of toys with other little children. Then a whole bunch of kids watered Grandad. The one occasion the set was used on the beach- it was most fit for purpose, the spade transferring a little sand at a time accordingly and each moulding toy producing pleasing models. The toys are lovely bright colours and nice and chunky for toddler hands such as my son's. That said- I'm sure a child of any age would appreciate this toy up until the point when they no longer play on the beach, preferring to wear black, eat chips and sulk on holiday. The set is made well enough for the price. It's fairly lightweight, so travelling with it is no major drama and your little one will be able to manage transporting it around as they play. It's not the thickest, most robust plastic in the world- but like I say, it does what it's designed for as long as it's treated properly. I imagine the bucket's handle might snap if it was swung around and stamped on- but provided you don't partake in such a carry on in a moment of holiday madness, I'd think it will last for the duration. **Back Home** We still have the set. It now lives in various boxes in various rooms. I've not seen the watering can for a while but I did step on a crocodile earlier. The holiday magic is over and poor old bucket set has been cast aside for now. However, fear not, as it's waiting in the side lines to get involved in paddling pool fun just as soon as summer arrives... So glad I bought this set. It provides as much bucket and spade set fun as you can possibly have for an absolute snip of a bargain! Bargain bucket! Definitely worth shoving it into the suitcase- you can even stuff socks inbetween the plastic toys to save on space! ;-)
