Advantages: Bright colours, easy to throw, family fun, reasonably priced
Disadvantages: Black jack
This boules set includes eight boules enabling you to play with up to four people at a time. Traditionally, a set of boules is metal in construction and silver in colour, however these boules differ from the norm and would thus be good for both young and old in my opinion. The boules are made out of plastic and are very brightly coloured being two balls in yellow, two in red, two in blue and two in green. In addition a jack is included which is black in colour. As well as the boules being bright in colour they also have a textured shell to allow them to be easy to pick up and throw.
These boules are weighted using water meaning that although they carry weight to them they are easily lifted by smaller hands and are considerably lighter than their metal relatives.
The boules come encased in a black clip open carry case which allows all the boules to be neatly housed away when you are not playing with them. In addition the case is handy to carry the boules around with you should you want to take them down to the park or to the beach for the day which we have done on many an occasion.
**Price and Availability**
We paid around £8 for our boules set and brought them from a toy shop last year. This is a bargain in my experience considering the costly investment that a quality metal boules set will cost. You can also buy these boules online and they are currently stocked on Amazon for £5.95 (price as of May 2012).
The object of this game is to see who can get their boules closest to the jack. To start the game players are allocated two boules of the same colour which usually is the competitive ignition in our household as the usual lucky colour banter starts. One player then throws the jack to a point on the lawn. This can be quite far away or quite close to the group of players depending on how good their throw is. Once the jack is thrown the players take it in turns to throw or roll their boules to the jack from a throw point. The player who ends up with their boules closest to the jack is the winner. A tangent of this game is that you are allowed to hit other player's boules and bounce them away so of course when a strong player is throwing the next player will usually try and offset their opponent's boule.
I come from a large family therefore in our house we usually play boules a round at a time. The first person to score five hits nearest to the jack wins that round enabling another group of people to have a play.
We love playing this game when we have people over and inevitably as the boules come in four colours we find that people allocate a certain ball colour to being more or less of a winner than the others (in our house the red boules are the luckiest pair). The game is a great conversation starter and brings out the competitive players form a crowd. In addition we find that many a laugh has been had playing with these. The beauty of the boules being plastic is that they are unlikely to get scratched in the same way as metal ones would and that they can be played with children. We have yet to introduce our younger family members to the game but we are looking forward to doing so this summer. We have played our boules both in the back garden and down at the beach and can testify to them being of a good quality and weight.
My only criticism of this game is the colour of the jack as being black it works well at the beach but on the lawn it can sink into longer grass and become difficult to see. A yellow or orange jack would have been better for purpose in my opinion.
This is a great game, one that can be played over and over again without getting bored and this is a good version of boules. It is therefore highly recommended by me.
As a result of my review this product scores a very good four stars from me.
