Mookie - Catcherball Game
Advantages: good fun
Disadvantages: The strap can slip in play
With this set you receive 2 pads and a ball which make up a fun ball game for both children and adults. My children love ball games they like trying to play with bats and balls so when I seen this for just £2 at home bargains I decided to pick it up for them for our next trip to the local country park.
The Pads and the ball
The pads are a fair size they can be used by children and adults and although it is a little large on my sons hand this provides a bigger target for him to catch the ball with while still meaning adults can have a go if they wish. There is a handle on the back of the pad so you can sit the pad comfortably on your hand while you play and again it is a little loose on my 4 year old son even when you adjust it to the lowest setting he can still get it to stay put while he plays. On the other side of the mat is a Velcro finish and this of course is to catch the ball when it is thrown.
The ball has a fluffy finish to it so that when it hits the Velcro it sticks to the pad although this does not always happen and if you throw it too hard it will just bounce of the mitt most of the time it will catch well to the Velcro which is the whole point of the game.
The ball is light so that it could hurt if it was to catch you but not too much making it suitable for younger children. This also makes the ball easier to stick to the pads and the weight does not pull it off the pad as although the Velcro is fairly effective at holding the ball it is not impossible for it to unstuck. It still has enough weight to carry itself well so it can be thrown and not knocked off course too much by a little wind although obviously it is not great if it is a windy day as any more than a little gust it does get blown of course.
Well they say the simple things in life are often the best and this is true for this game even though it is a simple concept of throwing and catching a ball it really can be fun for all ages. It can be used outdoors and we often take it if we are going for a picnic or day out to the beach as it is small enough to be practical to take along with us.
All you have to do is throw and try to catch the ball it does not work well as a 1 person game although that is not to say my children have not tried they like to throw the ball in the air and try and catch it themselves but it works a lot better with two people throwing it back and forth.
It can be played with by all the family and it is great for some fun outdoors it helps with fine motor skills and as you are jumping about trying to catch the ball it is great to burn a little energy while having fun. The whole set is very simple and you do not need any special skills to use it making it fun without being frustrating there is no winner or loser in this game either which although I think a little competition is great it is nice to have a game that can just be enjoyed by the family.
We have had this for coming up to a year now and it is still fully usable I do find that sometimes the strap to hold the pad of my hand does come loose and the more we have used it the more this happens although the Velcro on this has worn down the Velcro on the front of the pad does seem to work just as well as it ever did.
I do believe we will get at least another summers use out of this if not more which for the price we paid and the amount of use we have had out of it I think is great. Some of the fluffy cover of the ball has come away from the ball but again there is still enough to make it fully useable still and it still catches to the pads well.
It is recommended for 3 years plus which I can see why as it can be difficult to catch the ball for younger children and the pad seems very oversized for them. However my daughter and youngest son both like to try and have had a lot of fun with this set. I do worry as their fine motor skills are not as developed as they need to be for this game and there has been occasions where they have been caught with the ball but will no lasting damage and this does not seem to put them off playing with it.
I think this is great fun not only for my children but my husband and I have also been known to have a go much to my children's delight and it can be used by both adults and children for simple fun and to develop fine motor skills.
Summary: Great fun for the whole family
