Disadvantages: None these really are fab
Mookie scuttlebugs were a hug hit at our local mother and toddler group last year and both my girls took a shine to them without being able to actually have a go on the scuttlebug , as their was only three scuttlebugs between twenty toddlers their were loads of tantrums and tear between the children not able to share , the bikes were removed from the group so unfair. I decided to check them out online in hope to buy two of them so my girls would have a something to play with in the garden. I choose to buy the scuttlebugs from amazon for £24.99 each. I was unsure after reading the reviews on amazon however i took a chance. My girls were two years old when i bought them their scuttlebugs and as these are made for age 1 - 3 years i was also wary at the time about how quickly the girls would grow out of them but this has not been an issue.
Scuttlebugs come in different colours such as blue representing a dragonfly, bumble bee in yellow, red being a beetle, pink being a butterfly. I choose a pink one and red so the colours were different save any fighting between the girls of the who is who's nonsense.
When the scuttlebugs arrived they come in small boxes all folded up. The instructions are way over complicated for such a small toy bike. Each part of the bike has plastic wrap to be removed. The scuttlebug is very easy to set up takes only a few minutes as the legs are clipped together under the seat , just a tug of each leg and they click into place so simple. The handle bar at the front also clips into place. I cant see why the scuttlebugs we have resemble an insect apart from the colours. The pink scuttlebug for instance is hot pink all over with 6 small purple flowers on the seat, looks pretty but doesn't resemble a butterfly.
Scuttlebugs have long shaped seats , wide at the back and narrow at the front. The seat has the patterns and scuttlebug motif on the side. I like the fact the seat is long as it stops the child slipping of the back. The legs of the scuttle bugs are short, made from steel with small thin wheels.
Their are two wheels at the back and only one wheel at the front joined onto the pole that has the handle bars.
The wheels on the back are angled making the wheels stick out to the side and further back on the bike rather than straight, this is to stop toddlers catching the wheels on the back of their feet or shoes making it difficult to use as i have seen with many ride on toys.
The angled poles and wheels are also to stop the bike being toppled over, they act like stabilisers. I also noticed the scuttlebug legs or seat are not adjustable at all so once the child has growen out of the scuttlebug thats it.
The scuttlebug is small in height around 10 inches from the ground to seat making it incredibly easy for toddlers to get on and off even 1 year olds would manage this.
My girls can get on and of the bikes with ease and the scuttlebug one year on still fits them now they are three but if i had waited until this year i wouldn't have bought them one because i think another 6-8 months they will grow out of them , at least we will still get another summer out of them.
I was surprised how lightweight the scuttlebugs are making this an added bonus as they are portable. The scuttlebugs fold down quickly with a simple pull catch a bit like a pram. Each leg has a plastic part with arrows showing where to pull and what direction and the spring releases allowing the legs to be folded down that also clips back into the seat underneath as their is three sections for the legs to be put in. When all folded up the scuttlebug is so compact it can fit in a bag, or under the pushchair to take with you. I often do this as we go to the park etc even good to take to grandmas at the weekend.
The seats down look very comfy as they are made from touch plastic with textured bumps on them but my children haven't moaned about it so much be ok.
The handle bar consist of one plastic bar, very small looking but after all these are perfect size for small toddler hands to grip. The steering of the scuttlebug looks odd as it is only one wheel on the front but the wheel turns with the handle bar going right or left.
My daughters manage the steering fine and as soon as they got to sit on the scuttlebugs they were off just took to them like a duck to water.
What i like most about the scuttlebugs is these can be used indoors as well as out due to the tough rubber wheels do not leave any marks on the floors. My house is not the biggest of houses but my girls get around on the scuttlebugs easily without bumping into furniture , walls or doors.
I don't leave the scuttlebugs outside because i don't want them to be sun damaged therefore they still look like new apart from a few small scuffs to the wheels as outdoor used.
I have found the scuttlebugs to be compact, easy to use, easy to store, portable and very durable. I think the scuttlebugs are a great idea for toddlers and much more appling than the fancy branded ride on toys.
My girls love their scuttlebugs and can really zoom around on them, don't think a day hasn't gone by where they haven't used their scuttlebugs. I always recommend the scuttlebugs to friends with young children so i highly recommend them on dooyoo. Your children will love them too.
If you do wish to buy a scuttlebug i recommend checking out amazon uk first as the scuttlebugs were reduced to £16.99 last week and their seems to be a lot of specials on the scuttlebugs each week with amazon. I did find the amazon reviews worrying but having to a chance i can say now i have never had any problems with the scuttlebugs i really love them great inventions well done mookie!
Summary: A super ride on toy, 10 / 10
