Mini-witch will be 4 years old in a week or so, and this is one of her presents. It arrived in two huge boxes that weighed a ton, and were therefore very obviously screaming at her that there was something exciting in them. She is always spoilt rotten for her birthday, so due to the rare good weather, we decided that she could have this present early.
My daughter had wanted a trampoline for a while, and I wanted to get her one that would last her a few years, taking the abuse it would inevitably get from an over-excited child. This one was reduced at Tesco Direct, and worked out at around half the price of other similar sized trampolines. I had never heard of Plum before, but all of the reviews were great. This is an 8ft trampoline with enclosure, the perfect size for a nearly 4 year old and a couple of friends.
I had to get help with this as a) I couldn't lift the two big boxes and b) would not have been physically able to set the thing up. As it was, the day it came I had a handyman in doing work on my garden so I bribed him with a few cups of tea. The boxes will need two people to move them unless you are strong, and are very well packed. There are instructions included which are easy to follow but really it is fairly easy to put together. I was expecting the guy to take at least an hour to set it up, maybe more but it was up and looking hideous in just 20 minutes!
Why hideous? Well these things are ugly and cumbersome. They take over the garden. As far as colours go, the green on this one blends in a bit, but this will be a prominent feature in your garden unfortunately. I have planted a load of willow bushes around the base of mine and cannot wait for them to start growing!
All of the tubes are strong metal and fit together easily. Using Vaseline on the ends ensures that they will be easier to take apart again, but to be honest I don't see us doing that for a long time. All of the metal structural parts are made from galvanised steel, so very strong. Plum trampolines feature something that they call the "Tramp Klamp" which surprisingly is not a badly done tattoo, but a special type of bracket which encloses the joints on the frame to protect against rust. It also serves to reinforce the frame and support then main structure.
This is a complete kit, ie no need to buy the cushions or the netting like some brands.
ASSEMBLING THE MONSTER:
You get a lot of tubing which initially looks quite daunting, but once laid out on the grass it becomes apparent what goes where. You start by attaching the side supports to the base with the supplied screws. Again, we used Vaseline to help the screws go in and to protect them. The screws were long enough to do the job and everything progressed smoothly without any rude words. The handyman did not follow the instructions to the letter and preferred the "make it up as I go along approach". This seemed to work which I think is a testament to the simplicity of the design.
The springs attach to the bouncy trampoline base through reinforced eyelet type gizmo's and these are made from steel with a Zinc coating. They were easy to fit and it took no time at all to attach them to the base and frame. The padding for the upright poles is thick and efficient. This just slides on when the poles are upright. The pads that go around the trampoline base are also easy to fit and are made from a form of waterproof webbing. They do not move about and stay where they need to be for safety. The design of these pads and the netting is specially created for optimum safety so that the bouncy child does not come a cropper in the springs.
The last piece to go on (although I am sure that we did not do any of it in the right order) was the netting, easy enough to slide on when you are stood on the bouncy bit. It has a slight convex shape and has double stitched seams. The front of the net features a zip and three yellow plastic clips to keep the door part closed. This would be useful to keep pets off of the trampoline but unfortunately my dogs are too old now to give it more than a token eyebrow raise.
If you do not have the physical issues that I have (disability), then it is perfectly feasible that an adult could get this assembled alone. However it is much easier with two people unless you have assembled a trampoline before.
Once assembled, you have a big green bouncy thing that looks very enticing, even to me. If I did not have a wonky back and hips then I would have loved to have had a go. As it was, Mr Handyman and a friend tested it out for me, and from their whooping it could be assumed that it was great fun. The bouncing surface is 8ft, plenty of space. And the base of it is very responsive and light. It is possible to bounce very high on this thing, so the safety net and padding is a big plus for little kids.
We did not bother with a ladder although I will be getting a cover for it at some point. We also made sure that we anchored the base with 3 very heavy duty crowbars hammered into the soil over the metal "legs" as the wind here has been known to lift up a greenhouse in the winter.....
The trampoline feels safe and stable, there is no rocking or movement. I recommend a tarpaulin underneath it to stop weeds and grass getting too long. There is space under the trampoline for 2 large dogs to sleep in the shade...another bonus!

This 8ft trampoline is fantastic fun for kids and helps to burn of energy. It is a bouncy and playful way for children to undertake physical exercise, and is also a very sociable activity. It improves balance, strength and co-ordination. This is an excellent thing to have in your garden if you have the space. Trampolining is an super exercise for increasing bilateral motor skills, rhythm, cardiovascular fitness, bone density and circulation. It takes up to 80% off the stress of your weight-bearing joints so is a low impact exercise too. Apparently a ten minute bounce session provides the equivalent benefits of a half hour run, yet, (so says NASA) and is also up to 68% more effective.
Trampoline bouncing is strenuous so ensure lots of drinks to hand. Also be warned that kids will whoop and screech like deranged cockerels. At this point it is best to use headphones or hit the gin....
When my daughter came home from her day at the beach she was very excited to see this. She got straight on it and started to bounce like a pro, learning the "bum bounce" very quickly ( landing on your bum after a big bounce and bouncing upright again). She has used it every day and every evening and it is a chore to get her in at night. She would happily sleep in it if she could (and yes she has asked and I *am* considering it....)
I consider this to be a total bargain, and although prices vary all over the net, we grabbed this for just £74.50 (half price) at Tesco Direct. Some stores are charging £170 for the same item....
This is a well made trampoline and should last for years. Brilliant fun!
