      (Near) Perfect Plum

My daughter received this swing as an early birthday present from my parents. I'd chosen it after doing some reading up on infant swings and thought this was the one to go for due to it's look, size and the reviews I'd read on it. Obviously it's a very weather dependent item but luckily she's managed to have a lot of use from it so far!

      Cost and Availability
My parents bought it from the Tesco direct website a couple of months back for £70 at a special offer price (it had originally been on sale for £95 from there when I chose it so I think they were pleasantly surprised when ordering!). It comes directly from the manufacturer so is not available to pick up in store. It is also available from other selected toy stores to order too.

      Sizing
The swing frame is small at 1.24m x 1.2m x 1m, designed for use by children up to the age of 3 although it has a maximum weight of 25kg too. As the whole thing isn't very big, it sits nicely in the garden without being too intrusive, although we've had to put it fairly central to the lawn because the instructions said that we needed to leave a 2m space around it - this may not be ideal for small gardens.

      Design
We started using it just before the age of 1; the recommended age is from 10 months old. The swing has to be assembled as it turns up flat packed - it took two people around half an hour to do it and they said the hardest part was fixing it into the ground rather than the actual build. It has huge anchor bolts that (understandably) are needed to clamp the frame to the ground but as our lawn soil is a solid clay it was a bit of a nightmare knocking these in enough. Having seen other similar swings available on display in other toy stores, this clearly looks and feels super quality - the frame is made up of very chunky thick wood (that is FSC certified timber) and it doesn't wobble whatsoever in our garden - it feels incredibly sturdy. To be fair to others available, this was the most expensive infant swing that we came across - most others were around £20 cheaper.

A few thoughts on the seat design....
The swing comes with a small seat that has a fastening around to hold her in place. I do think the seat design and fastening could have been designed a little better - the fastening is made up of a material strip with a pull through clip that you tighten as required but I think a proper harness clasp fastening (like ones found on most pushchairs and highchairs) would have been more appropriate. It keeps her in place and secures her in the seat but the tie clip fastening is a pain when taking her out because it's not just a case of clipping it undone, you have to untie it and is fiddly especially when she's wriggling to get out.

The seat is red mostly but has a yellow thick T-bar across - her legs go through the T-bar to stop her slipping out of the seat. I wish the yellow thick bar lifted up to help with putting her in because sometimes it's a bit of an effort to try and get her legs to go through the right sections and would have been easier if she could have been placed into the seat and then put this section down into place rather than slotting her into the seat with this already fixed. I assume with an infant's inquisitive nature, they might not have done this because they could try and move it themselves but there could have been something to lock it down to stop that.

The seat has a large backrest, although we do have to be careful when pushing her that she doesn't move her head back quickly and bang it against it because that would be easy done. The whole seat is made of plastic which is a great to wipe clean if there's been a few days of bad weather or when my husband's mowed the lawn and grass gets on it. Replacement seats are available but ours still looks brand new after a couple of months of use so I'd assume you'd only need one if it perhaps gets damaged over winter. The seat is held on by two thick pieces of rope that attach it to the frame. The rope is 'softfeel' and it's a good job because my daughter seems to like to grab onto these! We've not found that they've shredded pieces at all.

      Our Use
My daughter absolutely adores her swing, she giggles so much whenever we put her in it, kicking her legs like mad to try and get it going as it rocks to a stop. She can spend around 10 minutes in it with us pushing her slightly back and forth really enjoying herself and then she gets to the stage where she's had enough and wants to get out and play with other toys. Obviously it is a garden toy that always needs adult supervision. Half an hour later we can put her back in and she'll spend a similar amount of time in it laughing once again. I think based on the age guidelines we should just get 2 perhaps 3 summers from it and at the price of £70 I think it was very good value because it's super quality and definitely her favourite activity outside.

I rate it 4 stars overall - one taken off for the seat design not being quite as perfect as it could have been.

      Thanks for reading :o)
