      fabulous slide

Wanted to buy my son a slide for his second birthday. Did my usual searching and checking reviews on the web. I didn't really want to buy there very small slides as I knew my son would grow bored of it quickly and he is happy to go down large slides in the park. I also wanted a slide he could use independently as I would soon be having his little sister so wanted him to be able to use it without any help as I would be restricted to my sofa for much of the summer feeding a new baby. This seemed the perfect size, had good reviews and seems to be a very good price.

My husband put the slide together easily and we actually left it up in the kitchen as on his birthday it was pouring with rain. He was delighted to see it and its bright red and lime green colour is appealing. The Four steps are quite chunky and my son can easily climb them and the gap between each step isn't really big enough for his feet to skip between them.

There are two large handles at the top which feel secure and come up quite high so it makes it easier for them to get to the top and then sit down all while holding on. The slide has a slight wave in it rather than being straight which add something a bit different but isn't particularly significant. The bottom of the slide sits on the floor so at the end of the slide they land nicely on the floor.

The slide is made from thick sturdy plastic. It sits securely on our grass. My son also enjoys pushing the slide over onto its side and then onto its back and climbs onto the underneath and is still as good as new. We also had a larger than average 9 year old playing on it who had a habit of jumping down onto her bum to sit down at the top rather than gently sitting down and then also bumped her way down it and it held up very well and didn't seem to make any difference.

The great added feature of making it a water slide has made this a hit with all our visitors with kids. You simply attach your hose with a clip to the nozzle that sits under the top of the slide and turn your tap on. Depending how much you turn the tap on depends how much the water spurts out the top of the slide. A small amount of water Allows the water to gently trickle out the top and fall the whole way down the slide. More water means the water spurts out the holes at the top in an arc and hits the rider near the bottom of the slide as they glide through the shower of water. Whenever any kids come to visit in the summer they know to bring a costume and towel.

A great addition to our garden toys, already looking forward to getting it out next summer.

A cheaper alternative to some other products that is built to the same standard.

With summer coming and a twenty one month old running amok in the house it was decided that we needed some garden toys for those days when we haven't got anything planned. It was decided that we would look for a climbing frame and if we couldn't find one of them a small slide would have to do.

Our first choice of toys were the Little Tike's range but they all seemed quite expensive, even on e-bay. My girlfriend came across the Smoby medium garden slide whilst browsing the babies r us website. It looked ideal and wasn't overly expensive.

It is currently priced at £54.99 on the babys r us website, this is £15 cheaper than RRP BUT is only available for home delivery but delivery is free.

I am writing this review having received delivery of the slide today. It arrived in a long cardboard box with a picture of the slide on the front. My son was so excited I couldn't get near the box to get it out and set it up.

I always dread building anything that has come in a box. My son gets quite excited and to his credit even tries to help but if I'm honest it just makes things more difficult. I was however relieved to see that the slide wasn't in a million pieces and after looking through the assembly instructions it was very straight forward.

The slide comes in six pieces. A ladder, ladder base, slide, two handles, support brace and a base for the bottom of the slide. It also comes with a bag with five plastic nut caps, a 6mm threaded screw with lock nut and two self tapping screws.

The only tools you need is a big Phillips head screwdriver, a 10mm spanner and a large flat headed screwdriver. The assembly instructions show that one person should assemble it and it will take thirty minutes. Anybody assembling the slide should easily be able to do it on their own and it probably shouldn't even take the thirty minutes.

The instructions are very clear and are complete in six easy steps. Some parts click together. The support brace uses a nut cap and the bolt and nut and the two side handles use the other four nut caps. The plastic nut caps are tightened using a large screwdriver but a coin would probably do the job just fine.

Once you have built the slide up you will be the proud owner of a very colourful and well designed slide that is suitable for children up to the weight of 50kg. It is a simple design using lightweight plastic but it does have a really solid feel to it and seems sturdy. It is not something that will be easily pushed over and there is no chance of the plastic nut caps coming loose.

Its dimensions are Size H102, W158, D150cm and it weighs a measly 9kg. I currently have it set up in my living room until the weather improves and it really doesn't take up too much room at all.

As my son is only still very young he finds it difficult to climb the ladder. At first I thought it was because it was difficult for him to get his feet into the steps but as he has climbed more he has got used to it.

The two side handles are sturdy and can be used by a child to pull themselves up by keeping hold of them all the way up the ladder and to steady themselves when sitting down at the top.

One thing I will warn about is that the slide is actually quite fast even though it isn't that high or steep. My son flies down it and if I don't catch him he bangs his head at the bottom (not that it bothers him). An older child may not have this problem and may have more control over their descent down the slide.

You should bear in mind that this slide is designed for children of three years and over but as I don't plan on leaving my son unsupervised whilst playing on it I don't really have a problem with the age range. He will get hours of fun playing on it. I just get to be absolutely shattered running back and forth helping him up the ladder and then holding onto him until I can get to the front of the slide to catch him. His smiling face is a good reward, although my aching back disagrees somewhat.

Another feature on the slide is a hose pipe attachment on the underside of the seat at the top of the slide. There are a series of holes which allow water to sprinkle down the slide. A good idea if you use the slide on concrete (which probably isn't a good idea) but not so good if you don't want to waterlog your garden lawn.

The plastic is also treated with an anti UV treatment. A lot of the items we looked at on e-bay had a lot of sun damage and the colours had really faded away. I want something that will last quite a while and still look good so this is a bit of a bonus.

It can also be dismantled very easily. Again a bonus, I have found that a lot of my sons toys are not so easy to dismantle as they are too build up, so when winter comes it should be easy to store away in the loft until the sunshine pops out once again.

I probably shouldnt recommend this slide as I have bought it for a child that is well under the recommended age to use it but if you are willing to stay with your child all the time then I see no problem with letting a child younger than three play with it. I am very happy that we bought it and can see us getting a few years use out of it.

To anybody with a child around the age of three I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a basic child's slide to have in the garden. At the price it costs compared to some similar products I can see no argument to suggest you shouldnt buy one.
