TST Retro Space Hopper
Advantages: Good fun for burning the calories or just for acting like a big kid
Disadvantages: Hard to control at first
Growing up in the UK in the 70's and the 80's was a great time indeed to be a child! The music was great, the summers were longer and kids actually played outside and made their own entertainment. Kids toys were great back then, the bikes were cooler (Tomahawks, Choppers and Grifters), and of course we also had this simple but fun toy...The Space Hopper!
The Space Hopper was an Italian invention believe it or not and in 1969 it became a craze that continued right up until the early 1980's, although continued to sell well until the early 1990's. I harked back to that time when life was easy and people everywhere were bouncing about on these things, I wondered if you could still buy them today, and if you could, would they still be as good as I remember them? Like most things you remember from your childhood, they just don't seem the same as an adult. Well I am proud to say, you can still buy them and they are as good as I remember them (even better!).
The Space Hopper is a large rubber ball (about 60-70 cm in diameter), which I didn't find out until it arrived in the post, has to be inflated....twenty agonizing minutes later...
It has two handles with grips on it and you sit like you would sit on a horse and bounce along like a mad human controlled bouncy ball, I use the word 'controlled' very loosely as not before long I was crashing into every piece of furniture in my living room. I was having fun, my daughter just looked at me like she wished her dad would calm down before he does some serious damage. My daughter did eventually see the fun side of it though (I bought a small Peppa Pig one for her, now we can act like mad bouncy lunatics together). The front of the Hopper is decorated with a face to give it that child friendly appearance, so it not only feels the same as the original but looks the same as the original too.
When I had my first go on it, it was either more tiring than I seem to remember, or I am just so unfit, I accepted the latter and this is a fantastic tool to burn those calories and it's fun too. I often sit on it and watch television while I'm having my bouncy workout(Now that I have mastered controlling the thing).
Waking up one day feeling nostalgic and I haven't regretted a single second of purchasing this fun bouncy toy since that morning. The only downside some people will probably find is where to store it, as it does take up a lot of room, luckily I have a big enough cupboard just for the Space Hopper. I never realised when I was thinking about buying it, that I would be using it as a workout tool, so I really got two things for the price of one here, and considering you can pick one up from www.play.com for £19.90 including delivery, that's a massive bargain.
Summary: Back to the 70's with this fun bouncy toy, the novelty never really wears off.
