The Hotpoint SY36X/1 electric oven is a great example of a single built in oven which will suit any modern kitchen. I purchased my Hotpoint SY36X/1 model as part of a multi buy kitchen appliances set from Homebase when I had my new kitchen fitted last year, however it can be bought singly and will easily fit into an existing space. The beauty of any Hotpoint product is that it exudes a certain quality, being that it is a mid range brand which was the main reason for my initial purchase.
The Appearance of the Hotpoint SY36X/1 ~
This is a modern and sleek oven which has a stainless steel brushed finish around the oven timer and dials and the Hotpoint logo stamped to the front. The dials themselves are also silver in colour and feature text to illustrate the temperatures they will reach and the controls. The door is particularly attractive being very shiny with a dark grey square outline and a black insert in the middle. This door opens outwards via a large silver handle and reflects the light like a mirror, which is great in a kitchen which is small as it reflects more light around the room.
Inside the oven is a polished black finish and contains 3 stainless steel grilled shelves and a black and silver grill with a black handle.
The Specification of the Product ~
Being a single oven means that this appliance is quite compact in size and its measurements are 595mm high x 595mm wide x 569mm depth. The depth of this oven means that it fits snugly underneath a standard width of worktop and likewise fits under a standard height of worktop too. As this is a built in oven this does mean that it makes sense to buy it when fitting a new kitchen to allow the cupboards to be designed around it, however it could be dropped into a standard column where an existing oven was housed.
This oven contains all the features needed for cooking, and these include the following:
* Fan Cooking
* Variable Electric grill
* Electronic timer with control of time
* Airflow fan
* Double glazed door
* Easy Clean oven finish
* Chimney venting
* Drop down door
* 1 year warranty from Hotpoint
* Digital Clock
A good feature of this oven is that it is fan assisted, an asset to any oven as it means that it heats up in record time. I usually find that it is warm within a few minutes of turning on. Additionally it contains 3 stainless steel shelves inside the oven and a grill. The benefits to this being that you can fit an array of trays inside the oven for baking which provide good space considering it is a single oven. The clock on this oven is digital and gives a light orange glow around the kitchen. This timer is handy as a means to time the cooking period but also to preset the oven for a time when it needs to come on in the day.
The oven is controlled by two dials either side of the digital timer. The right hand dial controls the part of the oven to be switched on i.e. whether it is the main oven or just the grill while the left hand dial determines the heat setting required. The maximum heat that hits oven can reach is just above 220°C however it is worth noting that like all fan assisted ovens it is best to select a temperature slightly cooler than advised on the food packet to prevent burning.
When purchasing this oven Hotpoint make the installation easy with a detailed booklet explaining the various brackets and how it should be fitted together. All the parts come readily packaged in polythene to protect them from any knocks or scratches. Admittedly however I did not fit our oven and can not therefore testify to how easy it was to install however our chippie fitted out oven within a couple of hours into the intended housing.
Being electric, this oven does not require any gas work and can simply be plugged straight into a mains socket for instant use. The clock can easily be set to the right time using the three buttons underneath the timer.
The Price ~
As mentioned previously, I bought this oven as part of a multi appliance deal; however it can be purchased singly for around the £300 - £350 mark. I have recently seen it on sale at the website appliances direct for £291.55.
The Performance ~
This oven heats up quickly and is therefore ideal on those nights when you come in from work and want to put something straight into the oven. This oven is very easy and straightforward to use and as I have only ever used the basic features to cook food it has always well exceeded my needs.
Being fan assisted means that this oven cooks food quickly and rather than heating up certain areas of the food while cooking it bakes the entire area at the same heat. There is a good amount of shelving inside the oven for cooking day to day meals and for baking, and this oven excels in baking large cakes to perfection. This is a single oven and therefore it is not as large as some of the larger double ovens on the market, however it has served my household well in cooking for two, or at times a lot more people.
Being that the inside of the oven is black means that it does not show dirt at all, and when cleaning is required the polished surface is easy to scrub and then wipe clean and sparkling. I have cleaned my oven inside once every three months and still find that it looks brand new.
My Summary ~
I can not speak highly enough of this oven as it has always more than catered to my needs. However there is only one criticism that I would have and this is that the shiny appearance of the door and the stainless steel surround can be difficult to clean. Being a stickler for cleaning and in particular my kitchen, I often find that I have to polish the door as it does show streaks easily. The stainless steel around the knobs and timer can also get marked easily by sticky fingers and therefore regularly need wiping.
Overall this is a well priced and great performance oven from Hotpoint which I have been entirely satisfied with from day one, and hence I am giving it 5 stars out of 5.
Thank-you for taking the time to read my review.
