I bought this oven about six months ago for just under £700 from BHS direct. I spent months researching ovens and decided that NEFF would be the best quality oven and that a series 3 would suit my needs and budget. You (like my OH) may think that this is a lot of money to pay for an oven, but it really is worth paying the extra for something so reliable and energy efficient.
The number of functions you can choose from are as follows:-
circoTherm - ultra efficient fan oven for roasting and baking
Top and bottom heat - for baking/roasting on one level only
Circothern intensive - for ready made products that require a lot of heat from under -such as pizza, lasagne and quiche
Circo-roasting - for a spit roast style chicken and anything needing extra crisping/browning
Large Grill- for a lot of items ot large item
Small grill - for smaller quantities
Bottom heat - for items requiring a crust on underside
Low temperature cooking - great for cooking rare steaks
Defrost - For a gentle defrost quicker than room temperature.
All series 3 neff ovens have the above functions but this model also has a slide under door - great to keep kids from running in to it and for smaller kitchens to give more space. The model with a normal door is B15E42.0GB and about £100 cheaper. There is a pyrolytic (self cleaning) version model number B15P42S0GB. The pyrolytic oven use loads of energy and extremely high temperatures to burn off food, I wanted something energy efficient so I decided against this option.
This oven has four small rotary controls that change the settings in the digital display. The two on the left handside set the timer, clock, start/end cooking time and turn rapid heat on and off. The right hand two change and display the temperature. In the centre of the oven is a dial selector which is simply turned until it points at the correct icon for the type of oven function you require. All these controls push in to be flush with the oven when not in use, which stops dust and grime collecting on them so much and makes cleaning easier.
Ease of cooking/operation
This oven is great for even and controllable heat. I have been trying to bake the perfect victoria sponge for 10 years with no success until I bought this oven. My sponges raised evenly and doubled in size using the circotherm oven setting and cooking on the bottom shelf - magic as far as I'm concerned. Food is always cooked evenly. You can immediately see what temperature the oven has heated up to by looking at the bar display on the front of the oven or the exact temperature to the nearest degree by pressing the info button.
On the downside, I find the oven takes quite a while to heat up to the required temperature even though the manufacturer spec says that it heats up ultra quickly and efficiently. However, if you are in a hurry you can use the rapid heat option to heat up the oven to temperature in a fraction of the time.
The timer function is great and allows you to put food in the oven and select the start and finish cooking time, it even takes into account the effect of the oven heating up to temperature on the food in its calculations. The timer beeps loudly when cooking time has ellasped and can be used as just a bog standard beeping timer rather than stopping the cooking.
The oven has a childproof look which prevents children (or interfering relatives) from operating the oven. This can be turned on or off easily.
This oven comes with the back, ceiling and side of the cooking compartment coated with a layer that absorbs and disintegrates splashes, meaning you only have to clean the bottom and oven door. If these self cleaning surfaces stop working so well, you can select an oven cleaning operating mode that renews them. I have had my oven for 6 months and I haven't had to do this yet.
The oven comes with a really large oven tray with removeable wire tray that can be used as a shelf and two other wire shelves.
Neff products come with a 2 year guarantee rather than the usual 12 months you get from other manufacturers.
