One thing that I had never tried until recently was Alka Seltzer, we had just simply never crossed paths! Then I was having a bit of a stock up on things I thought I may find helpful for in my medicine cabinet and I ordered a pack of ten of these from Amazon and since then I've had a few packs of them as I am a real fan of these and really do see them as a bit of a must have!
My pack of ten of these came in a light blue box with a side opening to them and on the front of the box and in white and red writing we are clearly told that thye are Alka-Seltzer 'Original' and that they contain Aspirin, Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate And Citric Acid and that they are meant to offer 'Fast Effective Pain Relief and that the manufacturer is called Bayer and there is a picture shown of the tablets fizzing then on the back of the box we are told a bit about the tablets and what they can be used for, directions for use are given (Suitable for over 16's only and 2 need to be taken every 4 hours or as needed), the ingredients are listed and contact details for the manufacturer are clearly given and there is a pamphlet in there giving warnings and more general information and the tablets come in light blue plastic wrappers, in 2's and on there much the same information is given as is on the box and they are easy to undo and so on and I like that each pack has 1 dose within them so they are great to pop in your handbag or whatever.
Each one is round and rather thin, white and slightly powdery to the touch with the branding on them. All you do is pop them into a glass of water and these can be used for general pain such as Migraine, Period Pains, Rheumatic And Muscular Pain, Toothache, Sore Throats, Nerve Pains and for the symptomatic relief of Colds And Flu.
They take just a few seconds to dissolve and you do need to give these a good stir however even when stirred really well you can usually see the white powder in them and the water appears cloudy and they start off fizzing in the water and still the mix is a bit fizzy by the time you come to drink it and to be fair this tastes salty and of aspirin and isn't all that pleasant though as soon as I drink this the flavour goes pretty quickly and doesn't linger in my mouth to be fair to it.
I love these and I mean really love them and wouldn't ever want to be without them. I take them for migraines and headaches, have taken them as a hangover cure when I've felt headachy and sore all over, I have taken them for backpain and period pains and they really do work for me particularly well on my migraines and I take them for fiboneuralgia.
Last night I stuck a knife right through my finger, the blade went through one side and came out the other. It poured of blood and it killed me, I even passed ou for a few minutes at the site of all the blood and the searing pain that I got landed with. When I came round and got over the initial shock of it all and cleaned the wound up before getting to the hospital I took one dose of these thinking they probably wouldn't help ease the pain and they really, really did till I got the hospital and they gave me pain relief and stitched it back up!
These for me may not taste the best but work for me on my most severe of pains, they even help my general aches and pains that all the other pain killers on the market failed to help and I really, really can't recommend these highly enough and I urge people to stop thinking that these are simply a hangover helper, they do help considerably when you have over indulged and mega quickly too but these are really overlooked in my opinion as a fantastic pain killer! I urge everyone with severe pains to try these, I really do. The other day my Mum had terrible tummy ache that again the tablets that she got from the Doctor fails to help and so I told her she must try these and not being a tablet fan she really resisted. To cut that tale short she stole a box of mine and got my Step-dad to buy some more for her! Now that a result in my book!
Top marks from me on these and I really do wish that I could rate higher than giving them a 5 star rating as these really are fabulous!
Readily available in Boots and other well known chemists and even Supermarkets I pay around £3.50 for a box of 10 from Amazon and I would even pay double if I had too for these wonderful tablets!

A medical cupboard essential, Alka Seltzer is a relief of minor aches and pains. According to it's box it can help treat inflammation, fever, headache, heartburn, sour stomach, indigestion, and hangovers (although that isn't mentioned on the box), by calming excess stomach acid.
I have to admit my only two uses of Alka Seltzer are headaches and hangovers, more often than not these two are somehow linked!
Alka Seltzer works differently from many other medicines on the market, rather than swallowing it and allowing it to work or taking it in medicine format, you place the Alka Seltzer tablet in a glass of water and watch it fizz and dissolve, this always proves fairly reassuring when hungover, the gentle fizz sounds lovely and refreshing while the fact it does that to water makes me feel it will do something similar to my head and stomach!!
We buy the 10 pack box, which is a light blue box with the while Alka Seltzer logo and a picture of two tablets fizzing, this product is available from all decent supermarkets and chemists and many local shops too. We buy ours from Pound land, unsurprisingly for a pound. Buying two or three boxes in one go guards against inflation and I think it is pretty good value for this price.
Once your Alka Seltzer has dissolved in a glass you drink it in one go, it fizzes like hell and tastes slightly of chalk but often with medicines, the worst the taste the more reassured you are that it has to be helping.
The idea is that the Alka Seltzer break up the stomach acids causing discomfort, this is very useful when your stomach hurts after a night out, allied to a filling breakfast and some hot coffee or fruit juice it is the perfect way of getting rid of the pain and discomfort of a hangover.
I have to admit we use other tablets for headaches and stomach problems and save these to counter the effects of a good night out, as we get older and go out less they last longer so £1 for about 6 months of relief from hangovers is good value in my book.
I often have various aches and pains and sometimes stomach ache; depending on the level of pain, I often just use Paracetemol caplets; they are really cheap and usually do the trick for mild pain. However, recently I had stomach ache (most probably I had overeaten!) But I generally didn't feel well. For a change I thought it would be good for me to use Alka Seltzer; I hadn't actually used this for years, but remembered using it and thinking that it was quite good for general stomach ache. It wasn't a low down period type pain; just a stomach pain in the middle.
I sent my partner down to Boots and requested he get me either Alka - seltzer or something similar. He promptly returned with the Alka- Seltzer. I was surprised to read that this is suitable for helping with many different types of pains/illnesses. I had also forgotten that it contained Aspirin. I hadn't actually used Aspirin for a long time (usually preferring to stick with Paracetemol products). Anyway in the box of Alka Seltzer my partner bought there were 20 sachets (each with two large tablets in).
It's important to mention that Alka Seltzer is not for children under the age of 16; it is only for those aged over 16 and Adults.
All you do is dissolve 2 tablets in a tumbler of water; it takes a few minutes for them to dissolve properly and creates a nice fizz. It actually tastes ok; it isn't too bitter; it just has a nice fizzy refreshing taste; similar to fizzy water. You must not take more than 8 tablets in a 24hour period. Also, you should not continue taking the tablets for more than 3 days without consulting a Doctor.
Within about 15 minutes, my stomach pain was much reduced; I took 2 more tablets 4 hours later and after that I was fine and the pain had gone!
Aspirin; Sodium Hydrogen; Citric Acid
Alka -Seltzer can be used for the 'fast and effective relief of general pain such as migraine, period pains, rheumatic and muscular pain, toothache, sore throat, nerve pain and the symptomatic relief of colds and flu'. I note it doesn't actually state general stomach pain but I found it really worked for me in this respect.
Alka-Seltzer comes in various sized boxes; you can currently buy a box of 30 tablets at Asda for £3.00
I will certainly be keeping Alka- Seltzer in my medicine cupboard from now on!
This product is worthy of 5 Dooyoo stars in my opinion; highly recommend.
I don't take pain killers very often, but when I do my preference is for something of the effervescent kind and as a rule I'm quite happy to tick to Superdrug's own brand. On a recent trip to my local store though I found that they were out of stock so had to opt for the nearest thing which in this case was a box of Alka Seltzer Original..
*~*What are they?*~*
Alka Seltzer's pain killing ingredient is aspirin so if you are allergic to this then they are a must to avoid. I prefer paracetamol based products myself as I find they work that little bit quicker, but my husband has always been a fan of Alka Seltzer for upset stomachs and does prefer these over the Superdrug brand that I normally buy. These give effect pain relief from:
* Period pains
* Rheumatic and muscular pain
* Sore throat
* Nerve pain
* Aches and pains associated with colds and flu
*~*Price, packaging & availability*~*
These effervescent tablets come in different formats but the ones I am reviewing are the original and come in a pack of 20. As you get 2 tablets paired up together in a separate wrapping this equates to 10 sachets. These individual sachets come housed in a thin but sturdy enough cardboard box which is rectangular in shape. Predominantly sky blue in colour with white lettering for the logo and relevant information this is eye catching yet as there are many similar products by different brands that all sport a blue and white uniform I wouldn't say it automatically stands out on the shelves.
Price wise this will obviously vary depending on where you choose to shop, but as I tend to buy these types of products from Superdrug just for the convenience of the locality I paid £2.19 which I deemed to be a very reasonable price. As I don't buy them myself frequently I don't know if this is the regular price or not as there was no mention of them being on offer or reduced.
Alka Seltzer is a well known brand and these tablets can be picked up from chemists, Supermarkets and most places that stock these type of items.
*~*How to take*~*
Each tablet must be dissolved in water before taking and are suitable for adults and children over 16 years old. The tablets can be taken every 4 hours (2 tablets) if necessary and no more than 8 in total in 24 hours.
I wont go into great detail about anything else as all the relevant information can be found on either the side of the packaging or with the accompanying leaflet inside the box.
*~*My experience of using these*~*
As I previously mentioned I much prefer Superdrug's own branded effervescent sachets as they get to work fast and taste almost pleasant with a lemon/ orange hint. When I saw that the shelve was empty and all they had in stock instead was Original Alka Seltzer I was less than pleased but thought better to have something in 'just to be on the safe side' I opted to buy a box.
The thing that has always put me off taking these in the past is the horrid taste that accompanies that 'clunk fizz' of the effervescent tablets getting to work and it always reminds me of a much more disgusting version of soda water (which I detest). My husband has only just recently shared with me the fact that he adds a tiny squeeze of lemon juice which helps to distract from the bitter taste, so having tried this myself I am incline to agree it does help somewhat.
I suffer from a lot of sore throats and find that regular paracetamol can upset my stomach sometimes so prefer an effervescent variety. Having had a nasty sore throat the past few days I found myself reaching for these rather than tablet form as my throat has felt too sore to swallow even liquids.
After letting the tablets dissolve in tap water, which takes less than one minute, and adding a squirt of lemon juice, I drink the bubbling formula rather quickly in a 'down in one' scenario just to get it over with. Within around 15 to 20 minutes I have noticed an improvement on my throat and though it has not cured it, it has eased with the pain even for a temporary period of time.
I have taken this on many occasions for upset stomachs and find the formula does help to settle my stomach whether it has been caused by a tummy bug, over eating or over drinking - it brings rapid relief and that's all that matters!
My husband suffers with migraines and says these are very effective though as they are something I have never suffered with myself I cannot comment, but for upset stomachs or sore throats I can highly recommend them as they seem to get to work within a short time of taking a dose.
Recommended pain killers - especially after adding a dash of lemon juice!
I have been using Alka-Seltzer for years now and it is probably one of the original painkillers on the market. I personally buy my box of Alka-Seltzer from our local pharmacy and I pay £2.50 for a box of 20 tablets. The tablets are large, round and flat and designed to dissolve rapidly in cold water.
I have personally used Alka-Seltzer over the years for a number of different reasons. I primarily use this as a fast acting treatment for pain, including headaches, toothaches, muscles aches and pains and if I feel the beginnings of a cold or flu. I always find that it acts quickly and though I cannot describe the taste of Alka-Seltzer as being pleasant, I can vouch that it is fast acting and reasonably effective for what is essentially a soluble aspirin.
Alka-Seltzer is not recommended for children under the age of 16 years unless a GP has specifically given the go-ahead to do this. I have personally been using Alka-Seltzer since my early twenties - so that is going back a bit! I tend to dissolve the tables in a fruit cordial, rather than plain water, as I think it tastes slightly better this way.
I take two tablets at once and I am careful to never exceed the stated dosage of 8 tablets in any 24 hour period. As well as being very useful and fast acting for aches and pains, I personally also find this very useful for whenever I have acid indigestion and heartburn. After a heavy meal I can often feel very bloated and full and my stomach distends quite noticeable. If I take a couple of these then it seems to help break down the bloated feeling and releases the discomfort very quickly.
I think I should make note of the fact that you should never take this medication long term, and no longer than 3 consecutive days without consulting your GP as the solution contains aspirin and this can be dangerous if taken without medical advice.
Overall though, I have to say this is a tried and trusted method of mine and Alka-Seltzer has undoubtedly assisted me with various aches, pains and acid / heartburn conditions over the years and it is a medication I trust and can recommend.
I always thought Alka Seltzer was an incredibly old fashioned thing that middle aged women used but no one else really did. It wasn't until I had an awfully bad hangover and I was round someone elses house who swore by alka seltzer and they persuaded me to give it a go. I felt so awful that I really had nothing else to lose.
The look, smell and consistency of it is so off putting, when your stomach feels unsettled the last thing you want to do is put something unknown into it, but you have to get over that initial barrier and force it down if you ever want to feel better. A word of warning though, it is better to sip it than gulp it down if you are at risk of being sick! It is also best to let it all dissolve and settle down to stop bubbling for a while before drinking, just leave it a couple of minutes after putting the tablet in the water.
Alka seltzer comes in boxes of different sizes. The outside is a blue cardboard box with a picture of a tablet on bubbling as it dissolves in some water. Inside are small sachets with tablets in. You drop the tablet into a cup of water and it dissolves to give a mildy sparkling drink and then you drink it and it fixes you!
Everytime I have taken alka seltzer I have felt better within an hour. Not 100% better, but better enough to do things and carry about my normal day. It eases headaches and settles stomachs that may be feeling sick or queasy. Since I have found alka seltzer I could not live without it.
Alka Seltzer is the make or break of hangovers. Sometimes you wake up with that familiar nausea, headache, dry mouth and generally feeling like death sensation take alka seltzer and feel a whole lot better. Other times you take alka seltzer and it seems to churn your stomach into a frenzy of activity and erupt back in nasty vomiting sessions. For that reason I often don't take alka seltzer for hangovers!
It's a dissolvable pain killer and stomach settler and although many don't like the taste I actually really like it, but then I like andrews liver salts too so each to their own! It's bitter and fizzy, you can taste the aspirin in it. Which brings me to my next point, if you are not supposed to take aspirin do not take alka seltzer!
If you over-indulge, think xmas day and all that food and drink, it's a good remedy to ease the bloating and ward off the headache. Just be careful if you are feeling like you might be sick, this can prompt you to be sick so can make matters worse.
It's not very convenient if you're on the go, as you need a glass of water to plink, plink, fizz with and time for the tablets to dissolve but if you have time it's as effective as taking aspirin with an indigestion remedy.
At about £3.50 for 20 tablets it's not very expensive but as pain relief it's not that effective. It really is best for over indulgence.
They now do a stronger version with added paracetomal and caffeine too which I think would be better for other pain related problems.
Not bad though as far as hangover cures go.
Alka Seltzer was invented in Germany in 1931. It contains three active ingredients, aspirin, sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. Aspirin is not recommended for all so the medicine should be taken with caution or from advice from a trained specialist. Also consider this medicine is for multi-symptoms and unless you have all of the symptoms there is no point taking it. Headaches heart burn and for stomach related issues like gas, indigestion and cramps. Also it is good for pains associated with periods, rheumatic and muscular and even toothaches.
Alka Seltzer is over the counter drug by this I mean anyone can buy it without prescription.
From all the research I have done, it is advised not to take it if you have peptic ulcers, gout, and asthma and if you are breastfeeding.
I suppose anyone who takes this medicine knows how fast the tablet dissolves into the water. Amazing, that although the product was invented 74 years ago it is still selling in millions.
You can buy this product from £2.79.
Alka Seltzer tablets come in pack of 10, or 20 and cost around £3.55 for the larger pack. They are designed as a cure for headache, hangover, stomach upsets and similar things. My first experience of these, some years ago, put off for life.
Let me explain. I had a really bad hangover caused by excess of vodka and our local chemist's shop recommended these. They come in a nice fresh looking blue and white pack and each tablet is wrapped in foil to keep it dry and fresh.
I followed the instructions carefully and put two tablets in some water and started to drink the liquid while it was fizzing. I barely swallowed the second mouthful when I vomited so violently that I felt dizzy with it. Some hours later I did try again because I though that the vomiting may have been caused by the vodka and not the Alka Seltzer. This time the same thing happened after the first mouthful. This continued for about half an hour.
I concluded from this that although these tablets are recommended by many people, they just don't agree with me.
That might have been the end of the story but I went to a friend's house, a short while after this and saw her using Alka Seltzer to clean her toilet bowl. Apparently two tablets thrown into he bowl leaves it fresh and clean. I also discovered some more uses for these tablets.
Clean your coffee maker. Drop a couple of Alka Seltzer tablets in, fill up with water and leave. It works a treat.
Clean jewellery in seconds. Dip your jewellery into a fizzing cup of Alka Seltzer and remove immediately. It will come out shiny and bright.
Clean a drain. Put three tablets down the drain and then add a cup of white vinegar. Leave for a few minutes, then flush with hot water.
Clean dentures. Soak for twenty minutes and your teeth will sparkle.
Clean a glass vase. Drop a tablet into cold water and leave for ten minutes. This will remove stains.
If these medicinal tablets can clean a drain, a coffee pot and other things it's no wonder that my sensitive stomach didn't like them. It did make me wonder just how many people are affected in the same way.
Sound confusing? Well it would sound even more confusing if you have just woken up in the morning after an almighty binge on Bacardi Coke’s (my favourite) the night before. My mum of all people always suggested that if I had been drinking I should always have a glass of milk before sleeping. “Milk – You Must be Joking” was my reply. I would probably through-up with all that booze in my system. So the next alternative is one or two glasses of water. Although this does help it still doesn’t stop your head from feeling like a football that’s being kicked around and your stomach and legs feeling like jelly. I have found over the years that one of the best remedies is “Alka-Seltzer” tablets. I have been using the original version since the last ten years and more recently started using the XS version since they also go for the same price of £3.49 for a box of 20 tablets from Pharmacy2u, who are my regular suppliers. I saw an opinion today on this product and this gave me the impetus for my opinion. The dosage is 2 tablets in water, to be taken every 4 hours as required. You can take a maximum of 8 tablets in a 24 hour period. These tablets are the effervescent type and therefore will start fizzing immediately they are inserted into the water. Wait for them to completely dissolve before swallowing the mixture. They contain a high dosage of Aspirin (324mg per tablet to be precise) and therefore those you are allergic to aspirin should totally avoid this product. Now my reaction to the product. First of all just the very thought of swallowing something or drinking something (other than plain water) in the morning of a hangover is a daunting one indeed. However since these are effervescent they create a concoction similar in looks to a soda or sparkling mineral water and thus the initial reaction is somewhat stifled. It also helps your body to accept the m
edicine since it is in a liquid form. One of the most appauling things about these tablets is there taste. I usually just pinch my nose closed and try and swallow this down as quickly as possible. They do undoubtedly work and relief is usually felt within an hour after intake. The effects will wear off in about three to four hours time and I would recommend that you try and eat something (if you are upto it) and then take another 2 tablets. In an effort to make things a bit more tolerable for consumers they also have a Lemon Flavoured version. However due to the potency of the medicine this only has a slight effect in making the product taste better. Alka-Seltzer tablets can also be used for normal headaches and other types of pains like muscular paints, toothache, period pains and the likes. Overall a good product that works but don’t expect instant or permanent relief. Only time can do that and off course cutting back on the booze in “the night before the morning”
Never again! Like most people I have been guilty of saying these two words on occasions after going over the top with the fruit of the vine the night before. You know the feeling – you wake up with the sound of someone drilling in your head and your stomach feels as though there’s something running round inside it. I have tried most of the so-called hangover cures over the years with varying degrees of success, but now I have actually found one that works! Yes, you did read that correctly – it works! It is called Alka Seltzer XS and it comes in the form of two large tablets, which you dissolve in a glass of water and then drink, and it doesn't taste too bad either. They contain something to settle your stomach and something for the headache (ooh that headache!) The headache is actually a result of dehydration so the liquid in which you dissolve your tablets is help in itself. The tablets are purchased in a box of 10, wrapped two at a time in foil, so that they can be kept and transported easily. I always take some on holiday with me just in case! I think the last box I bought cost me about £3. I find that a small to medium sized hangover will be cleared completely within an hour or so of taking these tablets. If you’ve really gone over the top, then this will help you to feel better than you do but will not completely relieve the symptoms! We’re not talking miracles here! To help things along a walk in the fresh air helps to blow away the cobwebs and fresh fruit juice helps with the dehydration and also replaces vitamin C. The restorative properties of Alka Seltzer XS are also improved if you remember to drink a pint of water before you go to bed, as you don't dehydrate quite so much. I can do this if I’ve had a bit too much to drink, but I’m afraid if I’ve had far too much I can’t be bothered and then I regret it big time
the following morning! Cheers!
I discovered this product while on holidays with four mates in the Canaries. As you can expect we gave our bodies a good rollicking, with too little food and too much drink. It was about the 5th night and it looked like I'd have to skip it because I had reached meltdown. Then out of the blue (box!!!), one of the lads handed me a strange little package containing 2 tablets. As I watched the tablets fizz in the glass of water, I began to get flashbacks of all the cocktails that resembled it. It was a big effort to swallow the mixture but it didn't taste too bad. Miraculously within minutes both my crocked stomach and confused brain were back in shape and ready for action. That night I met my girlfriend of two years. Ever since I always have a box of Alka-Seltzer near the bed. Can't say I'm too gone on dissolvable cures but as they go this is the best. It works best if you take it before you go to bed because when you wake up you'll be as right as rain. Cures every hangover except a Jack Daniels one!
Alka Seltzer Original Tablets can be used to treat conditions such as migraines, period pains, toothache, sore throats, joint swelling and stiffness, neuralgia, lower back pain, sciatica, rheumatic and muscular aches and pains, muscle tenderness and stiffness, sprains, strains and symptoms of cold and flu such as feverishness / Being an antacid, Alka Seltzer is especially useful for acid indigestion and heartburn, helping to break up the full feeling and pain fast!
