Asda Paracetamol Caplets
Advantages: cheap, easy to swallow, work well for mild to moderate pain
Disadvantages: none really
When I was younger I used to suffer from quite a lot of migraines and headaches and would find myself sometimes taking pain killers daily. As I grew up a bit I started to think that it wasn't really the best idea to be popping pills all the time because I am sure you build up a resistance to their effects and so I now only take pain killers if I feel I really have to and have tried other methods first. Sometimes though you do need to reach for the paracetamol and this past week has been one of those occasions when I have been struck down with a horrible cold which basically wiped me out. My mum picked me some supplies up when doing her weekly shop at Asda and one of the items she brought me back were Asda's own paracetamol caplets which I shall be reviewing today.
The paracetamol caplets come in a small thin cardboard box which is blue and white. It is a simple design with the Asda name, the product name and strength and the words "effective pain relief" on the front as well as a picture of the caplet. The packaging really is minimal but I don't see why it should be anything else and as this minimal packaging helps keep the price down I am happy with this! The box is a good size for throwing in your hand bag and not being too space consuming but will also be easy enough to find when you need them.
Inside the box there are two strips of eight paracetamol caplets and so there are sixteen in the pack altogether. The strips are you basic looking white plastic with a foil back in which the tablets are pushed through. I do like how the caplets come in two strips because I will sometimes pop one strip of tablets in the bathroom cabinet for those times when a tablet or two is required in the middle of the night!
The caplets are an oblong shape and feature a line in the middle which means you can break it in half if you wanted to either only take half a tablet or if you find it easier to swallow a smaller tablet. I personally think these caplets are really easy to swallow because the are quite thin and long as opposed to round and fat and they also are coated so don't stick in the throat when you swallow them down with a drink.
These caplets are 500mg and so the standard dose of paracetamol really. You will find that in store and online you are only allowed to purchase two packs of it at any one time as well. I find these caplets work quickly, within an hour at the most, for most of my moderate pains as a rule and so for mild headaches, toothache or period pains they are fine. I have struggled to use these alone for the more severe headaches brought on by this nasty cold and have had to use them along side ibuprofen and a 4head stick too but I would say this is not really a normal pain. For the bog standard pains that occur sometimes these are a good option to have in.
You can take up to eight of these paracetamol in a twenty four hour period and you should have four hours between doses as well. You need to be over twelve to use these caplets too but I would imagine most children would prefer to not swallow tablets if they can help it anyway!
These caplets cost just 22p in Asda currently and I think that it is great value for money for an easy to swallow paracetamol caplet which will in most cases deal with pain effectively. I note the packaging claims to help with colds and flu and I would say there that if you really get struck down with a bad cold or flu you are going to need more than these caplets alone but for general use these are good to have in your medicine cupboard.
Thanks for reading my review!
Summary: A good cheap pain killer. Why pay for a brand name?
