I bought this massager as I was in a lot of pain and quite frankly I felt rather desperate. I have rheumatoid arthritis and have frequent back, shoulder and neck pain. I wanted a massager for my back and shoulders and knew that the heat option in this model was a good choice. Otherwise at the cost of 2 professional massages it seemed worth the risk - as long as I used it at least twice I would get my money's worth. Also I couldn't afford to pay for a professional massage once a week.
I think this massager is fantastic. If you are looking for a massager to relieve back or shoulder pain it won't address the cause of your pain but it will treat the symptoms very well. When my pain has been at it's worst it's helped loosen my back and reduce my pain enough for me to move around and be able to sit at a desk when all I wanted to do/could do before the massage was sit or lay in bed uncomfortably.
I like a firm massage but you can adjust the pressure of the massage by leaning into the massager or sitting slightly further forwards. Unless you like a light massage you probably won't use the rolling massage function much. It's pleasant but doesn't do much for loosening back muscles (in my opinion). The shiatsu massage is fantastic and the option to pause the massaging balls to hit those knotted or painful spots is essential in a massager. The heat option works well.
There are mixed reviews about the shoulder massage function. I think this is because it is at a fixed height and the massage balls don't reach everyone's shoulders. This is easily fixed for me by sitting on a cushion. Although the massage balls have a more limited range - fixed up or down only and rotating in place I've still been able to loosen the knots in my shoulders. I would give the shoulder massage function a 4 out of 5 but as you can see my overall rating is 5 stars.
I hope this review helps someone.
I have suffered from a sore back and very stiff shoulders for some time now, and I must say that the Homedics SBM-500H-3GB chair is a dream come true.
I firt found this product on Amazon and after reading several good reveiews about this product, I decided to purchase one for myself.
The chair costs around £130.00 but is worth every penny.
This massage chair is a 2 in 1 chair, which massages both your back (lower and upper) and your shoulders. It also comes with a remote control, so that you can choose whether you want to massage your lower back, upper back (or both), and can lower / upper the massage on your shoulders for if you are tall or short. The massage also comes with heat, which is really convenient, as this loosens the stiff muscles.
The massage works by creating a circular movement against the muscles in your back / shoulders. You may also adjust the massage so that you can have a rolling massage on your back which operates alongside your spine.
Eer since purchasing this chair, I have relieved some tension from my back and feel alot better now. Every now and again when I feel the pain come back, I have another session in the chair.
I find it a waste of money going out to the shops and buying those fancy chairs with a massager built in, which will cost you loads of money. Instead, this product does the exact same thing at only a fraction of the price, and is also easily transportable.
I recommend this chair to anyone who suffers from back ache and tense shoulders. Now I have got my own personal "massage therapist" for whenever I please.
Do you ever go to one of these shops where they have a massage chair for display and enjoyed sitting on it? Well, I loved it and then finally decided to get one home. Homedics 500H is one among the many massagers that the Homedics do. I bought this and a foot massager.
Homedics 500H costs me around £150 at a wholesale dealer and I bought it 6 months back when its prices were in peak. Now Amazon itself sells it for £155.
It works on the shoulder and back muscles. Both of them are independently controlled which gives you the most control and the fullest massage ever. It is basically designed like a seat pad so quite easy to place on any chair or sofa. But to get its best results, it best used on one of the executive chairs- like the ones in which your main boss sits in his office!!!lol! It has Velcro fasteners to put across the chair's back to hole it in place. I tried using mine on sofa but because I couldn't use the fastener, they would keep slipping down. Then tried it on one of the dining chair and it works fine.

I have noticed that with my height, I find it difficult to use both shoulder and back massage at the same time and I'm 5.5" which isn't too short!!!! I find it that the shoulder massager is at a good height if it would do the neck muscles but unfortunately it is too wide to work on the neck. Might be the 300H which has just the back massager would be better.
If the spot massager is constantly used for more than 3 mins, for safety reasons it automatically shuts down.
The shiatsu massage is very relieving- relaxes all your muscle fatigue.
I do think investing in one of these massagers turns out to be a lot cheaper than going to a spa or masseuse.
Overall I recommend this to anyone who loves to get pampered!
This shiatsu massager from Homedics is the latest model in the range. Previous models have came with or without heat, with the heat version costing slightly more, you can tell the two model versions apart due to the H at the end of the model name. The 500 only comes with heat and has two separate sets of rolling massagers compared to the single set on the older models. The two sets of rollers cover separate parts of your back, the shoulders and the rest of your back, this ensures that you can focus on the particular part of your back you want to focus on. The wired control unit is pretty self explanatory, but if you are not sure, the manual explains it all well. There is a little pocket attached to the side of the bottom part of the massager so there is a place to keep it rather than it just laying about.
It is quite a large unit so comes in a large box. Taking it out of the box was simple and didn't need much effort to get it set up and giving me a massage. There are 2 screws on the back which have big notices on, these state that they must be removed before you use the product, these screws must keep the massage rollers in place during transit. The back of the seat is quite tall and would cover even the tallest of people, I am 6"4 and the shoulder massage rollers on their highest setting are nowhere near my shoulders, they aren't far off keeping my ears warm.
Between the shoulder and back massagers there is obviously a small space which won't get touched but this isn't that big a space and you don't really miss it. You can make the massage feel more or less intense by the amount of pressure you put onto the back of the seat. The top part of your back where your spine curves outwards and towards the chair the massage can feel very intense up to the point where if you have too much pressure on it, it may hurt. I find that the lower part of the massage wasn't really doing a lot but I could readjust my position slightly and it would get to that part too.
There are two types of massage for the main back section, you can either have it doing the typical Shiatsu massage, this is where the rollers move up and down whilst going round in circles, you also have the option of heat which makes the massage feel a lot more soothing. There is also a rolling massage where the rollers just go up and down your back, this gives the feeling that your muscles are being stretched out and it feels good to have a combination of both, although strangely you have to change it yourself rather than it cycling through the 2 alternatively on its own. It does go through all the settings when in demo mode, but this as the name suggests is just a demo of what the product can do so only lasts a few minutes. Whatever type of massage you have, it lasts 15 minutes before it turns off automatically and the rollers return to there original positions, you can of course stop it before the 15 minutes is up or start again if you wish, it only turns off as a safety precaution.
The instruction booklet does mention that the unit should not be used before bed as it stimulates and can cause you to not be able to sleep. I find that it has the complete opposite effect on me and always thought massages were suppose to be a relaxing thing which should help you sleep. maybe it's just an individual thing.
At the time of writing this, the older models are around £50-£120 depending on model and whether it comes with heat. This model is around £175, I haven't used any other models so I can't compare, but the heat is nice to have but if you have two layers of clothing on I wouldn't have thought you would feel much of it anyway. The second set of rollers on your shoulders is something you would have to decide on a personal level, I find that I ache in the shoulder area so having a shoulder massage included is a big bonus, if you mainly want just your back massaged then one of the older, cheaper models might suit you better.
