Shiatsu is Japanese for "finger pressure" where the fingers and thumbs do healing and relaxing massage. The two massages incorporated into this unit are supposed to wok in the same way as fingers would - but in the privacy of you own home.
Having had this item for a good few years now, possibly five or six, I can vouch for the fact that this is a vey well made and long lasting product.
It is a small cushion size and coveed in soft type fleece. It has a long cable and is electrically operated. The cover cannot be removed but I have never had stains or even needed to wipe mine.
Once plugged in it has a button on the cushion - press once to activate the rotating massagers and press a second time to switch on the heat element in the massagers - they then glow red.
The cushion has two rotating massagers, each consisting of a large and small round smooth disc which is covered with fabric and is within the cushion.
The cushion is designed to go behind you neck, shoulders or lower back - wherever you feel you would like a relaxing massage.
You can use the cushion in you lower back while sitting upight in a chair - or else lie on the couch and have it behind you shoulders.
You are warned not to use it if you have impaired feeling in your body as you could inadvertently burn yourself by not noticing. However the heat is not such that you need to be worried if you have nomal sensations and I always use it with the heat setting on.
===How I Use It===
I have often used it for my neck and shoulders as it is very good for the aches you get after being hunched over the pc for a while - it can be used while in bed and if you half sit up you can put it behind you neck and the pillow. You do not put all you weight onto the unit - just rest agaist it - and you can adjust the intensity by moving around youself - or by having the flap to cover the massagers - or by lifting up the flap so you get a more intense massage.
However I have developed a novel way of using this that it is not supposed to be used for I think - but it is great.
Liking reflexology but not being able to afford it - what I do mostly on a daily basis is use this for foot massage. I use it in bed so you are not putting weight onto the unit but I put it down in the bed - switch it on to heat setting and then move my feet around over the massagers - it is very relaxing and I am sure does me good - both fro getting the circulation going and also moving lymph aound - as well as hopefully activating some reflexology points.
So while I often use it on my shoulders it is the foot massage that I find most beneficial. But of course it is up to you how you use it.
There ae much larger cushions for sale but I find this little one just right for me. Being small it is easy to store and also move from room to room.

===User Manual Online===
On a recent Amazon spree, I saw that the Homedics Shiatsu Massage Cushion was on a special deal and at such a bargain price, I had to have one. I get quite a tense neck and stiff hips sometimes, so a massage cushion was something I really could do with. It was on offer for £25 and it is usually well above £35 so I bought it straight away!
As soon as it arrived I had it out of the box and plugged in so I could give it a try, I was very excited to try it! The cushion comes inside a box, with a plastic bag wrapped around the cushion. Inside this bag there is also a user manual and a guarantee booklet. When you first open the bag, there is a plastic cover on the plug which needs to be removed before use and the cord is neatly folded, held in place by a small velcro strip which is attached to the cord.
The cushion itself is a biege colour, and nice and squishy, comfortable and stylish. There is a small cloth flap on the front of the cushion, which can be used to control how deep the massage is. If you have the flap over the massage section, it lessens how hard the massage is, but flip the flap over the back of the cushion and you have a deep, intense massage. The cord is very long, so you should always be able to plug it in no matter where you sit and use it.
The on button is on the left hand side of the cushion, on the front. One squeeze turns on the massage function, and a second squeeze will turn the heat option on as well. Squeeze once more and the massage and heat both turn off. There is a safety feature built in, which turns the cushion off after 20 minutes of use, but should you wish to use it again, just turn it back on.
The cushion is designed for use on the neck, back and shoulders, but I also use it on my hips and thighs, and this works just as well! There is a strap attached to the back of the cushion, which allows you to secure the cushion to a chair so you can position it on your back when you are at work, on the computer or eating your dinner. I think this is quite a clever little idea!
I have hardly stopped using this cushion since it arrived, I really do not know how I have gone so long without one. It really works so well, the massage feels perfect and the heat option really helps the muscles to relax as well. I was a little worried the heat wouldn't be a good temperature to have any effect, but it is actually perfect! It is not too hot, but not so cool you do not feel it. The massage is just wonderful, almost like a professional massage in a salon or beauty parlour.
I found this to be amazing for the pain in my hips, and the tension in my neck and shoulders. I never knew I could be so relaxed until I tried this cushion. It has the perfect amount of pressure to enable you to feel relaxed and comfortable. It really does help with the pain I suffer from, although I am not going to use it as a medical device!
I do not think I can recommend this cushion enough, especially if you have a stressful job or you suffer with tight, sore muscles. For the price of this, even at the usual price Amazon charge for it, it is totally worth the money. It is still cheaper than a professional massage, and it will last you a lot longer. It comes with a 2 year guarantee, so should anything go wrong with in the first 24 months, you know you will have no problems sorting it out.
If you have circulation problems, or you are pregnant, this is not ideal for you to use. The safety warnings say not to use this whilst sleeping, and not to use under a blanket as it can get too hot and cause a fire. You are also warned not to sit on it, or stand on it as this can cause it to break easily.
I give this Shiatsu Cushion a 5 out of 5, and I recommend you swing on over to Amazon and buy one right away!
I purchased one of these last weekend at Curry's as i suffer with terrible tension headaches and my neck feels very sore and tight as a result of these.
I purchased it for £49.99 and it comes with a brief instruction booklet detailing who should and shouldn't use it and whether you need to consult a doctor first, e.g. people with epilepsy, people with previous spinal damage etc. You are only advised to use it for 20 minutes at a time, and it has a very handy cut-off timer, which turns off the massage function after the advised 20 minutes.
I tried it out the evening i brought it, and all i can say is WOW! You place the cushion under your preferred area, be it your head, neck, shoulders etc, and press the button at the bottom of the pillow to switch it on. It begins the massage straight away. There are two massage pads across the front of the cushion, and they work in a circular motion in opposite directions with just the right amount of pressure. The heat function helps soothe the muscles as you enjoy your massage.
There is an extra flap of material on the cushion which covers the massage pads (which are already covered in a woven material), which you can leave on or take off to suit your preffered intensity of massage.
The price of £49.99 may put you off slightly, but thinking realistically of how much you would pay for a neck or shoulder massage anyway i think it is worth the money. I was left feeling relaxed and calm, and it certainly eased the tension in my neck. All this, in the comfort of my own home.
I would definately recommend this cushion to anyone. Whether you suffer from tired, tense muscles or you just want to pamper yourself, this cushion is ideal.
Soft plush massage pillow for use on shoulders, neck, back and more.
