Advantages: Moisturises really well, cheap
Disadvantages: Feels greasy
I finally ran out of E45 cream and went to the pharmacy to buy some more and the lady behind the counter recommended that I try their own brand of emollient cream which is called aqueous cream. I'd never heard of aqueous cream before but the lady told me it was perfect for my symptoms but still I reluctant as I am a big fan of E45. The thing that swayed me was the price, £2.19 for a big 500g tub to be precise. I thought I may as well try it and see at that price.
Aqueous cream is a paraffin based emollient cream that is very similar in both colour and consistency to E45. What it does is leave an invisible layer on top of the skin to trap in moisture and soothe the skin.
It is a bit of a multi-purpose product that can be used for all different skin complaints such as eczema, dry skin, nappy rash, dermatitis, sunburn etc.
Personally I use it for dry skin on my body which sometimes flairs up and causes both pain and discomfort.
The cream is extremely thick and because of this it can be a little difficult to rub in completely and you need to put a little bit of effort into it to ensure that there are no white patches left. As it is an emollient it leaves a greasy layer on the skin which is something you just have to put up with for this lever of moisture.
I found that afterwards it really helped my skin and although I wasn't suffering a severe case of dry skin it got rid of it within a couple of days and I found it to be soothing and it stopped the itching.
It is unscented but as usual with these creams they do have a slight medical smell.
One of the best things about this cream is that I found i can use it instead of soap in the shower. All you have to do it rub it in and then wash it off and it will leave your skin feeling much softer and less dry and itchy.
One word of warning I made the mistake of just rubbing this into my face for a couple of days while I was using it on my body and it caused me to break out in spots and my skin just looked terrible afterwards.
I definitely think that aqueous cream from Lloyds is well worth the money and a bit of a bargain really and as I have trouble even telling the difference between this and my usual E4 i think I will just be buying this from now on due to the price difference.
Summary: a good cheap alternative to E45
