I have a huge problem with headaches. I actually take propranalol daily because of them and this stops them for the most part, however, I still get some what they call 'breakthrough' headaches. Although I have always got plenty of ibuprofen and paracetamol in the house for when I need them, I do like to try and avoid taking more tablets than I need and so I also keep things around such as this migrastick.
What is Migrastick?
A small rollerball glass container that looks a bit like a very small pocket perfume stick. It contains a combination of natural ingredients that when rubbed onto certain pulse points help to ease headaches.
How do you use Migrastick?
basically it's dead simple. Remove the lid, place the rollerball against your temples, centre of your forehead and back of the neck and in each location roll it round three times to release a small amount of the contents onto your skin. Sit back, relax and take in the lovely relaxing smell of this.
Where do I get it?
Boots, Holland & Barratt and a few other places sell this. I've even seen it in the larger supermarkets that have their own in store chemists. It generally costs around £5-7 and that does seem quite a lot for such a small container, but the thing lasts for AGES so it's not really that much in the long run.
Does it work?
Well sometimes is the simple answer - for me anyway. It's certainly not an unpleasant thing to use and feels nice and cooling on the skin and leaves you smelling lots of really nice smells of peppermint and lavender and things. Meanwhile the essential oils are getting into the skin and doing their thing - don't ask me how, I don't get it, I just know they do - and helping relieve the tension and pain. I guess being a chronic headache sufferer it's never going to work entirely all the time - painkillers don't work all the time either for me - but it definitely helps and I find it a worthwhile thing to try.
Why do I like this?
Well it's natural! It's a mixture of mint oil and lavender with a little isopropyl myristate as a carrier. It smells lovely and it does help relieve tension - in fact even if I don't have a headache, I sometimes use this when I'm feeling very tense as I find it helps to relax me so that I am less likely to get a headache. If it does work it stops me having to put too many pills in my system, and if it doesn't work entirely well its still relaxing and that helps when you have a headache.
Do I recommend this?
Yes - as long as you aren't allergic to any of the three ingredients, are an adult, not epileptic, or pregnant then, I'd recommend giving this a go. After all, it doesn't cost THAT much - less than a fancy coffee and cake - and it lasts ages and is quite small enough to stick in your handbag, pocket or drawer and have there 'in case'.
If you are looking for a natural means of pain relief from a mild headache then this is a good option that removes the need to take any pharmaceuticals. I have found this to be an effective treatment for mild headaches but I would not rely on it to treat a severe headache, I would still use it but as a supplement to a paracetomol or some other such pain relief medicine. I purchased this from Holland and Barrett and paid somewhere arounf the £6 mark for it.
The container looks a bit like a small lip gloss in terms of shape, inside there is a small roll on which is rubbed across your forehead to massage in the liquid inside and this provides instantly a cooling sensation to my forehead, the actual massaging sensation as the roller glides across my forehead is also quite soothing in itself and certainly provides a distraction to any pain that I'm feeling. Inside there are what is described as essentail oils such a lavender and peppermint which provide the soothing sensation and pain relief
It is effective at providing pain relief however as I have said it does have its limitations. However because it is made from naturally occuring ingredients it means you are not limited on how frequently you can use it and of course it can be used in conjunction with other treatments if required. I like the fact that I can use this on the go and it has been very useful while travelling either on the train or flying when the chance of a stress headache is increased.
The only time it has really failed me is when I have had a severe headache however most of the time the soothing relaxing sensations combined with a nice aroma have been enough to provide some much welcome pain relief.
Headaches can be draining and debilitating. They can really take it out of you, and make the day a misery. Headaches can be caused from various reasons such as tiredness, stress, lack of sleep or illness. In either case, they can occur frequently and make daily tasks more difficult to complete. The throbbing pain can be hard to cope with, which can leave many reaching for a helping hand to bring some much needed relief.
>> What a pain
I hate having a headache, and find that they are more commonplace with me than what they once were. I would rarely get headaches, and in times where one would occur I would generally ride it out and let it take its course. However, with them being more frequent due to stress or tiredness in the main, I wanted a little helping hand to bring relief without having to take medication. I'm not keen on taking medication, and I try to keep it to a minimal where possible.
>> A natural product to ease the pain
Whilst in Holland & Barrett I asked the assistant if there was anything for headaches. I was shown the Migrastick which had me intrigued. The product comes in a small silver bullet shaped glass container which is rather attractive. It comes packaged in a plastic covering with a card backing. The packaging contains all the necessary information about the product. It is a 100% pure and natural product that is said to relieve headaches and migraines. This was all the information that I needed, and I was happy to pay £5.65 for it.
>> A cooling sensation to the pressure points
The product may look small with it only containing 3mls of product, however, the convenient format allows for it to easy to take out and about for relief anytime. The application is easy and fuss free. Unscrewing the cap uncovers a metal roll-on ball which is to be used in a massaged motion to the temples, forehead and nape of the neck. The cooling sensation provides much needed relief with the essential oils which ease pain and tension. It contains lavender and peppermint oil which produce a wonderful aroma which is relaxing as well as pain relieving.
>> Essential oils bring relief
Lavender is known for its relaxing and healing properties which can help to combat stress and promote relaxation. Peppermint oil provides a cooling sensation when applied to the skin which helps alleviate pain by inducing a natural aesthesia effect. Combined, these essential oils are highly effective at relieving headaches naturally. The fresh aroma is relaxing whilst stimulating the pulse points to reduce the pain. Whilst the product is small, it is powerful and due to the nature of the rich oils, I find that it lasts a long time and provides many, many applications. I have had the same Migrastick for the last few months and it has been used on quite a few occasions.
>> Feel refreshed
The Migrastick can be used at the onset of a headache or migraine to relieve the symptoms. I find I reach for it whenever a headache approaches, or whenever my head feels fuzzy from tiredness or stress. That heavy head or tight head caused from tension can be draining and give a dull feeling. The Migrastick is ideal for these situations. It has always proved to be effective and I love the scent that it releases. It is refreshing, and the cooling sensation is wonderful for bringing instant relief.
>> The natural approach
This product has been invaluable and has provided relief in times of need. It is so easy to use and provides instant relief. The cooling sensation brings relief whilst the aroma relaxes the mind to heal and soothe headaches. The Migrastick is long-lasting and provides many applications, which proves to be cost effective, when considering how many pain killers would be purchased and consumed. The Migrastick is far better for your health, as it is natural. It contains no parabens, alcohol or preservatives. It is safe for use for those over the age of 12, and it shouldn't be used by epileptics or during pregnancy.
The Migrastick can be purchased from Holland & Barrett, or alternatively it can be found on-line.
It comes highly recommended for a natural way to cure headaches which can be caused by the demands of daily life.
My daughter suffers from migraines and this is the only thing that helps relieves most of the pain. She does not go any where with out it. I also have given it to my brother that suffers from occasion migraines. He says it helps him through the days he can't take off to deal with the migraine.
I don't suffer from migraine but occasionally from a headache and when I read about MIGRASTCK, I thought I'd give it a try. The pharmacist (in Germany it's sold in pharmacies, in GB in health food shops) put the stick on the counter, just like that, naked so-to-speak, I was positively surprised what with all the package rubbish we get nowadays when we go shopping. There is a negative aspect, though, no cardboard box means no instruction leaflet, the ingredients, info on how to use the stick and which precautions to consider are all printed on the stick in such small letters that I have to read them with a magnifying glass.
After buying the stick the absurd situation arose that I was waiting for the next headache in order to be able to test MIGRASTICK! When it came at last, I rolled the stick in circular massaging movements across my forehead from temple to temple and also across the nape of the neck. I noticed at once a pleasant aroma. The non-greasy fluid consists of 100% pure and essential oils of mint which has antispasmodic qualities and refreshing lavender oil.
At first I only felt the moisture of the fluid and the aroma, but after about five minutes a stinging sensation set in which lasted for about half an hour, it is a pleasant sensation, though, which - odd as it may sound - has a cooling effect. You may think 'the more, the better' and rub too much fluid onto your forehead, don't, it may irritate your eyes and you may have to weep. You'll have to find out for yourselves how much is enough.
My light headache disappeared indeed, I like the whole procedure so much that I've also used MIGRASTICK as a refreshment when I'm tired. I have to emphasize that I don't suffer from migraine and therefore can't say if it's effective for this disease as the name suggests. To be honest I doubt it, it would be too good to be true, yet I can imagine that it helps to alleviate the pain.
I can state that MIGRASTICK helps me in case of headaches, during my Christmas hols we were on Tenerife, after the flight and because of the change of climate I had a bad headache, I applied MIGRASTICK several times and didn't have to take a tablet which I would have done otherwise - if that isn't something! Additionally, I've found out that the combination of mint and lavender oil is also soothing on midge bites, maybe I should notify the producers so that they can include the information in the description of the product!
MIGRASTICK should not be used by children under twelve, pregnant or lactating women and epileptics.
The firm producing MIGRASTICK is called Arcopharma, its seat is in France and it has branches in 65 countries. I hadn't come across the name before, the homepage informs me that Arkopharma is the European pathfinder in natural medicine based on plants. With more than 1000 prescription-free products Arkopharma covers nearly every field of self-medication.
The roller stick is 5,8 cm long and 1,3 cm in diameter, the body is metallic green, the closing cap silvery, it looks rather elegant and fits in every handbag or pocket. It contains 3ml of fluid which last for about 100 applications, this means a very long time if you suffer from headaches only occasionally. A result of the longevity of my MIGRASTICK is that the elegant metallic green coating is peeling off, no elegance any more, but now I can see how much fluid is still left which isn't bad.
I've got two MIGRASTICKS at the moment but will buy at least on more in order to have one in my briefcase and in my handbags. The lowest price I've found online is 5,19 GBP, that may sound expensive, but if you think of how little one application costs, you can't complain.
I get headaches regularly and I also recently had a couple of months where I was getting frequent migraines. I don't like swallowing tablets so I often look out for alternative remedies. I've been using Migrastick for a couple of years now.

It is not recommended for children under seven, epileptics, or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. The tube tells me that if symptoms persist you should contact your GP.
~ My Experience ~
I really like using Migrastick when I have a headache. If the headache isn't severe and I apply it early enough it does help make a headache better. However, I often use this as well as taking some Nurofen tablets as if the headache is severe, it is sometimes not enough on its own.
When I have a migraine, I am physically sick so I can't take painkillers, as they don't stay down. So when I am lying in my sick bed in a dark room, unable to move, I often find my mam putting this on my head (she really does spoil me!) It smells like peppermint and is really soothing and relaxing on my head. I sometimes find it difficult to get to sleep with a migraine, as my curtains in my bedroom are not dark enough when its light outside so I lie on the settee in the front room. Also, the pain is so severe that I am unable to settle. Migrastick helps me relax so I am able to sleep my migraine off.
I often use Migrastick if I have an ordinary headache. I have several sticks as I tend to forget to pick them up when I go out (I use lots of different bags!). I have one in my jacket pocket at work, one in my school bag, and one in my coat so I nearly always have one at hand. This is really useful as it can be almost instant relief from a headache.
On the day of my biology exam in January I had a niggling headache so I put some Migrastick on my forehead, as I felt too sick (with nerves) to take any tablets. Unfortunately, I somehow managed to get it in my eye (not recommended) and it was stinging like mad! I couldn't open my eye and it started streaming. Fortunately, my dad was at hand (he spoils me too!) and he put some eye drops in my eye to wash the Migrastick out (I don't like eye drops either so I can't put them in myself!:-) It soon felt better and by the time I got to school and sat down to my exam (about half an hour later) I couldn't even tell that I had had anything in my eye! So although getting Migrastick in your eye is extremely unpleasant and certainly not something I would recommend, there was no lasting damage :-)
The Migrastick cools the area where it is applied and it leaves it quite moist, which feels soothing. There is a strong smell of Peppermint, which is very noticeable after you apply it. People often comment on the smell. If you don't like the smell of mint then this is definitely not a product for you. I, however, quite like the smell and it helps with easing the headache. My mam and I both agree that the smell also helps with relieving any nausea. Again this helps when I have a migraine.
My sister doesn't like Migrastick as she says it stings her eyes. Sometimes, if you put too much on you can feel it by a slight stinging in your eyes but its not much and the pain relief it provides is worth it.
~ Where can I get it and how much does it cost? ~
The RRP for Migrastick is £5.19 (for 3ml) but it is sometimes a little bit cheaper depending on where you buy it. It does seem expensive but it lasts a long time and it is worth it as it really does work. You can buy Migrastick from health food shops.
