Advantages: you know they're becoming more independent

Disadvantages: can be very embarassing

My son is now 2 years and 3 months old, I love him to bits and never stop talking about him to everyone I come into contact with. But when people told me about the terrible 2's , I said "No, not Nathan, he'll never be a terrible 2 year old". How wrong can a person be ?

It all started on his 2nd birthday, we had a small family party, the whether was lovely, everyone was enjoying themselves, even Nathan. Then BOOM!!, it was just like someone had flicked a switch inside him and he became this horrible little brat that no one can stand. At first we put it down to over-excitement, but as the day wore on we knew that it was the TT's kicking in. Out came the word 'NO' to everything, he threw his dinner everywhere, he even managed to demolish his cake while we were singing Happy Birthday to him. Needless to say that the party soon ended and Nathan went to bed (because he wanted to).

Things didn't improve from there either, the shopping trips became a nightmare, we ended up with more of our shopping in everyone elses trollies than we did our own. People stopped telling us what a lovely little boy we had and started to glare at him when he was screaming at the top of his lungs.

But I didn't give up hope, I kept on telling myself (and my Hubby) that it was just a phase and that he would get over it. Now 3 months down the line things are starting to improve. I've learn not to give in to him just to shut him up, but to distract him with something I'd much rather he'd play with or do, and although we still have the odd paddy things are a million times better.

My friends little boy turned 2 last week and she rang me today to tell me she's at her wits end. I told her to stay calm, because the more upset you get about it, the more they'll wind you up and play on it. I'm not saying that Nathan is now a little angel but things have certainly improved, we're getting there now. Lets jus
t hope it doesn't turn in to the TERRIBLE 3's !!

I've got a grandson going through the same thing. It seems to get better when they can express themselves more.
