Advantages: Unbroken Sleep!!!!
Disadvantages: can be a long road to get to the dry nights
My son, who is now six, has always always wet the bed. He did also dribble or have accidents until he started school last year. This did not bother me perhaps as much as it should have, I put pull ups on him at night, and waited it for it to stop. It was never an issue in our house, he had friends round to stay, and I would like to think had no embarressment over this at all.
However, sometimes the problem does need attention. I got a call from the school nurse earlier this year, and she suggested an appointment at our local hospital. I was very alarmed, and a bit scared about how they were going to tackle this--my son was more bothered he wouldn't be able to go straight out to play this day!!
The nurse asked a long series of questions asking how oftern he went to the toilet, how oftern he was wet, did he wake, and sent us both home with charts to fill in to monitor his drinks in a day, toilets in a day and if he was wet.
I obviously did not know what it was supposed to look like, so was quite nervous taking it back again the follwoing week.
They said that while he was going to the toilet a lot, he was not using all of his bladder size.
They diagnosed that he has a hormone missing that concentrates our urine during the night, and also stop us wetting the bed. He is on a medication called desmomelt for this. They also diagnosed irratible Bladder syndrome, meaning that he feels like he is desperate to go to the toilet, but actually has little in his bladder at all. This is being controlled by a syrup medicine called ditropan.
After three weeks on both medications being used together, my boy is now dry at night! He loves it and even though I hate to admit it was probably uncomfy sleeping with a pull up on at his age.
All in all, it has been hard work for me and my son, waking up during the night 3-4 times when he was wet as the midication kicked in, getting used to taking medicine, controlling his water intake at nightime. But the end result is fantastic and I would say to anyone who has this issue, please see a doctor if it goes on past school age, as there is a lot of things they can do to help.
