Advantages: Safer in some cases

Disadvantages: causes more problems during birth, in some cases occurs due to hospital policies

I have definatly learnt my lesson since I was induced whilst pregnant with my daughter.
I was only 2 days over due but I let the hospital talk me into being induced because they were worried about the size of the baby. Yes she was nearly 8 pounds and I am only a little dot.

Yes I know that this is no indication of what a woman's capabilities are but we are guided by the midwifes and the other staff who care for us during pregnancy.

It is these same midwifes who carry out inductions knowing that they can lead to other complications. I know that some woman who have medical problems do need to be induced, but there are many who are having the proceed ure simply because it is hospitals policy not to allow a woman to last more than two weeks over their due date. I understand that the placenta does not work efficiently after this time but it worries me how many woman are told that they need to be induced as they need to be on the safe side.

I do not think for one minute that these decisions are made for any other reason than for the best but I think it is scary the number of woman suffer a worse time during birth because there was an interference of nature.

It is known that an induction increases the chance of the need of pain relief a lot sooner or can also lead to a ceasarean.

This is what happened to me(read op) I truley believe that my daughter was not ready to be born when I was induced which is why I could not give birth to her naturally. She could not even be born by vontouse as she was just not ready. When she was born she was in shock.

I am not saying that midwifes are to blame or woman should feel guilty if they do need to be induced and maybe it is necessary to induce after two weeks for medical reasons. But I do feel that it should only be considered as a last resort to prevent all the complications that can follow.

I was induced with my first baby (14 days overdue) & I was not keen to repeat this experience - I had an intensely painful labour & gave bith in 1hr 15mins followed by a haemorrhage. I am sure that I wasn't ready to give birth either. This time when I was overdue by 9 days I requested a cervical sweep to attempt to start off the labour - it certainly got things moving - I had a show the following evening & then I had my son not long after (11 days overdue). I am so glad that I had a normal labour without intervention. I'm going to write my own opinion on induction now!

thank you juliet, of course I do not mind. It will help me and others if we know all the facts. That is what dooyoo is all about :0)

It seemed a little early for induction, I have always been offered it 10 days or over, yet saying that I had no choice when I was 5 days over, as I had all the sign of pre-eclampsia(sure I ave spelt that wrong) and the pain was more then I have ever had on the other labours. I would never have it done again, nice op, thanks Chele
