This is my first op. Date: - 11/10/01 Thursday 8:30 am

I remember when my sister was pregnant six years ago. It was her first in our family. We were all excited to hear that she was pregnant.

Everybody started looking after her with an extra. Why? Well one of the astrologists had told my mum that my sister is going to have lots of problems so be careful and watch her all the time. Since then my mum was really worried about my sister.

As we are Indian, in our tradition a celebration is done after 7 months of pregnancy. This is only for married girls.

So we went to my sister's in-laws as the celebration was there.

Let me just explain what her house looks like.

It is 3-floor house with marble stairs. Before you start wondering, she used to live in India with her in-laws.

Everybody was busy in chatting in the living room. For some religious reason, my dad was not allowed to this celebration. Whilst we were dressing my sister for the occasion, my dad phoned. Her husband answered the call and he called my sister to take the call. My sister was upstairs on the first floor and her husband was on the ground floor. As they don’t have another phone on the first floor, my sister had to go downstairs. Whilst going downstairs, she stepped on one of the coconuts that was being used. Somebody must have left it by mistake. My sister was wearing this sari which covered what was on the steps. And my sister nearly slipped a few steps; her husband quickly grabbed her really tightly. Phew! If she had fallen, there was no way the baby could have survived. My sister could have got hurt the worst. Imagine getting hurt on the marble steps. I still get the chill when I think about it.

Anyway that was over.

Then we decided to come to UK, as my sister wanted to give birth to her baby here. Everything was fine until it was time for the baby to come.

We took her to Northwi
ck Park Hospital in Harrow. 31st May 1996, the hottest day of the year. My sister was suffering so much. She decided to take the Gas for Pain killing and one of those Tense machines that you can hire. The Tense machine was not working on her at all. So then she decided to take Epidurol. I was horrified to see how they inject this epidurol. What they do is inject it on your back in one of the veins. You feel this liquid coming in your back, which is bloody very cold. The first dose work on her so they had to give her another. Meanwhile she was also taking gas, as the pain was unbearable. She must have inhaled too much gas that she just went. The nurses and doctors were calling her but no answer. Everybody panicked. I had to go out of the room as this had become Emergency. My heart was beating so fast that I could hear it. After a while, the doors opened and I could hear my sister screaming.

The doctors were telling the nurses to prepare for Emergency Caesarean. I heard them saying ‘Quick, the baby is sinking’. Everybody was rushing around. I was worried about both my sister and the baby. Please god! Praying to god to look after them.

After a while, the doctor came out and he gave us the good news. ‘Mother and baby are fine, although we will have to take the baby in the Incubator room. He is very cold.’ So it’s a boy. WOW! He is my first nephew.

What I would like to say is that giving birth is not easy at all. You never know what complications will occur during the Pregnancy and Labour.

I don't know if I can go through it.
