A blanket is not essential, it just takes up space in your bag that you could use for something else. All hospitals have cellular blankets that do the job. In fact it is probably better to use theirs just in case yours gets lost.
Now, I know it's going to sound hypocrytical of me, but I did take a blanket with me for my daughter. She was in special care for 3 weeks and I thought it would be nice to have something personal for her. But lets face it, she didn't really care as long as she was warm! When it came to going home, I had aquired so much stuff over the 3 weeks that I wished to God I had never taken the balnket in the first place. Very awkward it was! You dont need one!
