The major Public Schools will not, apparently, accept any pupils without CE so for those of us who think that the current education system does not give our children the right grounding, there is no option other than to put them under this pressure. The 11+ is the right sort of pressure for most kids - they then have the opportunity to further develop their specific skills in multiple subjects. The move to more technical schools and to GNVQ's and other qualifications will reduce the level of education that most kids are allowed to attain. This... more |

For those of us who came through the Grammar School or 11+ system, Common Entrance is something our grandparents used to talk about. That format is to put children under the pressure of having to sit eight (8) exams over a week and achieve over 65% in each one. That may not sound too bad, but remember that they are only 12 or 13, and their future education is at stake.
