Advantages: A well adjusted baby who cries less
Disadvantages: Difficult to do
I don't believe in taking the easy option with my little girl. I breastfed despite very sore cracked nipples (still have the scars to prove it). I cook her meals instead of jars, I only go to work when my husband is at home to look after her and spend endless hours playing with her (which I love but is exhausting) but I did use controlled crying. To read some opinions this is just an easy option and ignoring your babies cries for attention but I now have a baby who is happy to go off to sleep and does not get overtired and grumpy every night. Controlled crying is NOT just abandoning them to cry. Most, if not all mothers are very well tuned into their babies cries and know which each one means. If megan ever cried in anything but her tired cry I would go to her immediately. Before I started she always had plenty of attention and cuddles through the day for reassurance and every time I went up to reassure her she had strokes and talking to. She never got told off just told mummy was here and it was night time now. Often sitting for a few minutes holding her hand would help. She never went more than 20 mins crying (and that only happened twice). The result is that my baby is not sad at night time. She knows she can get me if she needs me and apart from 10-20 seconds of grumbling some nights as I walk out the door she is happy to go off to sleep. I was worried it would be harder now she has teeth as I brush her teeth after her breastfeed which makes her more alert but she still goes off very well. If I had relied on breastfeeding to get her to sleep I would not be able to brush her teeth at night. I would rather Megan go for 3-4 nights of difficulty settling than a scared toddler who has never learned it is safe to go to sleep on their own.

- 24/02/01 I can't belive mothers who would rather have their children up all night - because they think CC is cruel!!! I think children appreciate a good nights sleep, rather than being grumpy and irritable, in just a few days you can have your child in a lovely routine, that lasts, much better I think!!!! |
