Cotton wool,
I found a category for cotton wool that nobody else has written in yet. It is in the baby care section.
When I was training to be a nursery nurse cotton wool was one of the items that we had to have ready in the nappy changing basket, I was training in the days before Wipes, dry wipes or wet wipes. For a tiny baby I still think cotton wool is best to clean delicate bottoms.
In your baby changing basket or bag keep a few cotton wool balls ready. You can buy bags of cotton wool at chemists or the supermarket. You can buy cotton wool pleats these are pleats of cotton wool that are perforated so you can tear of a small pleat easily. It is cheaper to buy a roll of cotton wool though. You can easily make a roll of cotton wool into balls for use though. A good way is to warm the cotton wool up on your radiator (the cotton wool seems to expand) and then pull a little of the roll a piece the size that you think big enough for babies bottom. Put these pieces in a plastic bag. If you are super efficient you could wet a few in preparation for use over the next day or two and place these in a plastic bag that you can seal. These cotton wool balls are then ready for use in cleaning that cute little baby bottom
If you need to you can put cream on the cotton wool and rub it into babies sore bottom, using a barrier cream is a good way to prevent nappy rash.
If you do not wish to give tiny baby a proper bath cotton wool is good for top and tailing.
Have a bowl of warm water ready; cooled boiled water is best for babys eyes
Have your cotton wool ready by your side and a warm dry clean towel
Gently wipe babies eye outwards from the nose
With cotton wool and cooled boiled water. Use a separate piece for the other eye prevents spread of infections.
Gently wipe babies eye outwards from the nose
Wipe behind and over ear with moistened cotton wool never poke babies inner ear
Gently wipe around babies nose with another piece of cotton wool.
Then wipe babies chin cheeks forehead and mouth and neck, babies often have folds of skin on neck that need cleaning.
Clean baby fingers and palm of hand and wipe the back of hand too.
Next clean your babies bottom this is a good time to leave baby nappiless for a short time remember to clean baby girls front to back, for a boy clean his penis downwards and around his testicles. Clean your babies bottom then dry with a towel.
Feet next clean/ wash between those cute little tootsies and dry well. Best put that nappy on now or you will get a golden shower. Remember wash times should be fun play with baby. If you massage your baby this is a good time to do it massage those fingers and toes massage back and tummy, you now should have a sleepy baby,
Cotton wool is also useful to have in the first aid box for cleaning wounds. Cotton wool also makes good pads for cleaning make up off your face. Cotton wool is also good for making snowmen and snowflakes in childrens art projects. You can buy cotton wool easily at supermarkets chemists or department stores.

- 02/09/05 I agree totally with you on this. Cotton wool and water is so much gentler for a babies bottom than wipes. I have always used this for my children as wipes just make them red-raw!
Brilliantly written piece. |

- 16/06/05 So much on cotton wool! I have to admit that I never was a fan, went straight to wipes!

- 08/06/05 I used to make my own cotton balls form a roll when my son was in nappies - much cheaper and I also found that the real balls were the wrong size, so making my own meant I got them the right size
