Advantages: Cheap and effective.
Disadvantages: Can get a reaction to the plastic.
When I got pregnant with Noah I was bombarded with all sorts of information and leaflets. One of the things that I kept seeing in magazines and things was a list of things to take into hospital. On every list appeared the words 'disposable pants'. I'd never even heard of these and laughed at the thought of anyone wanting or having to wear these at any point in their life. There was no way I was going to have anything to do with these.
As time went on and I was putting things in a bag for the trip into hospital I thought I'd best be on the safe side and get a pack. I had packed half the house anyway so another thing wouldn't hurt.
On my next visit to Tesco I went down the baby aisle and next to the breast pads in a bright pink box was packets of disposable knickers. I couldn't believe I was here and to be quite honest I was totally embarressed. I think they cost me around 99p for five pairs. I hid them underneath the other items in my basket and breathed a sigh of relief as I resumed my shop. When I got to the checkout I made sure I went to an older lady taking comfort in the fact that maybe she would see I'm pregnant and realise that I didn't make a habit of buying disposable pants.
When I got home my hubby and I had a bit of a giggle when I got them out of the box. They were individually wrapped for hygiene reasons so I ripped one open and put them on to see if I had picked up the right size. They come in small, medium and large. They fitted like a glove and I was glad I went for the medium because my ass had grown an awful lot during my pregnancy (Thats something they don't tell you in the books!).
The whole point of the pants are that you bleed an awful lot when you have just had a baby so rather than get a load of pants bloody you can just throw these away.
Eventually the day came when my beautiful Noah entered the world and once I had showered I put a pair on. They were plastic but surprisingly comfortable. I changed them regularly then after a day of wearing them all of a sudden my bum became extremely itchy and red. After going through the utter embarressment of buying these beauties they decided that they'd give me even more embaressment and I ended up wth bloody 'Nappy rash'! The midwife took a look at it (by this point I had lost all of my diginity anyway so flashing my bum in her face wasn't really a problem!) and said she'd never seen anything like it before. Like my new born son I had to rub Sudocrem in my sore ass and hope that it healed. Obviously I stopped wearing the knickers too!
Thankfully it only took a few days to sort itself out but the rest of the knickers were binned and I just bought some 'Big black pants' which were equally embaressing to buy.
So ladies if you are pregnant and thinking about disposable knickers I'd suggest you give them a trial run first and keep a close eye on any rashes because you could end up in a bit of discomfort which isn't what you need after pushing a little body out of you!
Summary: Not for me thank you very much!
