Advantages: no labour pain

Disadvantages: side effect in form of shacking at some stage

I think most people afraid of a really strong pain.

So, when it was time for me to go to hospital (my waters were broken, but I didn't have any contractions) I recalled all those stories about women who was using gas and air, tens machines an so on, where almost every one asked for Epidural at the end anyway(if they could have it at the late stage of labour).
So, I decided to have Epidural strait away.

I was very afraid of injection into spine, but it was a good Hospital and really experienced stuff.

My contractions didn't come in natural way , so I was put on special drops and contractions soon started. (Well, I knew it because of the monitoring machine and very tense feeling in my stomach).

After 5 hours of labour I've got a beautiful baby girl and the main thing is that it was natural birth, painless, no stitches and exiting experience for me.

The only side effect that I've had is shaking at some stage, but it is nothing compare to the real pain of giving birth.

Now, I'm expecting my second child and I hope this time would be as easy as the first one.

I've got 3 month to think about everything anyway, but I'm pretty sure what kind of pain relieve I'm going to use.

I wish good luck for all mums-to-be:)

P.S.: Don't forget to ask your midwife whether you need to book an epidural ingection in advance, Because in my hospital there was no need to do so. (Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea)

epidurals are a gift from above. I love them!!!! (only for pain relief-they do cause other problems, read op)

I thought I had better add that this was over 5 babies and not all for the same pregnancy!

I have had pethadine (rubbish), then nothing (horrible, never again), the half epidural (not bad), full epidural, due to baby needing Ventouse help in coming out, (almost brilliant) and finally an emergency C-section which was totally pain free at the time. Great! The best but scary because of the circumstances.
