Advantages: Helps you deal with the pain

Disadvantages: Doesn't last very long.

When I arrived at the hospital to have my daughter I was already in considerable pain. I had to wait another fourty-five minutes for any pain relief so whether it was the fact that I had programmed myself into believing that any pain relief would work or whether it actually did work, I couldn't say.

I was offered either a mask or tube for the gas and air and opted for the tube as I figured it would be something for me to bite down on as well. The first few breaths of gas and air are very strange as you have to breathe out back down the tube and I found it hard to believe that I would be getting enough oxygen but obviously you do.

Every time a contraction begins you are supposed to start breathing in the gas and air and to continue breathing it in until the contraction has subsided. My head began to feel like I had been wearing tight headphones for ages and the pain began to be left behind. My mum and partner tell me that I wasn't making any sense with what I was saying and that I was a bit slurry.

I wouldn't say that it completly knocked out the pain as I was still aware of every contraction and it was the worst pain I have ever felt. The gas and air just made it easier for me to deal with the pain.

When the contractions got more forceful then the gas and air stopped working and I had to have an epidural.

Good luck to any mums to be reading this. Just keep thinking that it will all be over soon and that it is all worth it in the end.

my god you scared the life out of me with that - I thought the gas & air made it 'all better' I'm frightened of becomming pregnant as I'm frightened of giving birth....I'm hoping to read something one day on this site that doesn't make me feel like it would be painful

(Great review, really helpful to us "not quite ready" Mum's!)

What women suffer, would suggest they are all knocked out cold for childbirth, why be heroes and suffer!

It's good stuff without doubt. I would happily use it again, but hope never to have the need to!!
