Advantages: GCSEs are quite easy really.

Disadvantages: They're quite important for later life.

I think that by the time a student reaches GCSE age, the vast majority are more than capabale of understanding pass = good future, Fail = not so good future and are definately mature enough to realise they need to put their heads down.

On the other hand, they have still not reached their sensibility peak at this age and some children appear prone to dooming themseleves due to lack of interest and motivation.

I would say the first tip I can give is that in my experience, how the child behaves during the academic years prior to their GCSEs will influence how well they do by about 90%. Revision, will only account for a small amount of how well they do. That means that they need to be focussing throughout their term time, making sure homework is complete and making sure they are absorbing everything.

I understand GCSEs have now become modular, which probably makes the point I have just mentioned slightly less of a worry than it would be with the traditional 2 years learning, then the exams.

Tutors are not always a good option and for the money, it often isn't worth it. Many are not really that amazing and finding one that your child really gels with is quite hard.

Good luck and I hope your/son daughter does very well!

Summary: May the force be with you or your son/daughter!

I do question why we had to do so many exams and subjects. Takig 9 Gcses is intimadting to most poerple and maybe it would be better to do five or more, depending on your abiliites, concentring on the classics. I think thats the way to go. Middle class kid know what their aprents want them to be by 12 and so they know which one sto so but working clas kids need the basics.

Personally I don't think children should be given much homework if any at all. They have enough to deal with being made to sit in a room all day long. The school my hubby works in has alot of children that come from broken homes or worse so homework should be the last thing on their mind.

I also think some kids just arent cut out for education and I dont think it's necessarily true that a fail in gcse's means they have a 'not so good future'. I didnt do very well neither did a lot of my friends and we dont struggle. I m a full time mum (planned) and love every minute of what I do. I also qualified as a nursery nurse and went to uni. I think some people work better practically than educationally.

I just think school is a waste of time for some ad exams ca make alot of them go weak at the knees. I hate the way oureducational system works that they have to be jumping through hoops so early. They should be enjoying a childhood!

I don't mean to put a damper on your review just thouht Id share my view. An interesting opinion:)
