It goes without saying that exams can be the most stressful times of anyones life! I have gotten through both my Standard Grades and Highers and along the way I've picked up a few hints and tips which might help others . Educational establishments seem particularly fond of the "Timetable" technique. In my experience I find that unless you are happy working to a set plan it can be frustrating and distracting. I used to spend most of my time looking at my watch and wishing that I could have a break . Instead of using a timetable I prefer to sit down and study a section of work until I am confident with it then take a break. Rather then getting into study techniques which I'm sure is another section I'll get onto the main topic- stress relief! I find that when studying taking fresh air breaks can be really effective especially if you combine them with exercise. I found that doing yoga out of doors helped clear and refresh my mind but some might find football equally effective. Socialising if also a great way to destress, but it can be very tempting to not study and to sit about all day with friends so you need to impose some discipline and perhaps use seeing friends in the evening as a reward for a days study. I always use Bach Flower Rescue Remedy in the lead up to exams. It is about £4 for a bottle which lasts for ages as you only need a few drops at at time. it can be used neat- great for just before the exam jitters or sipped diluted in water over a period of time. It has a very calming effect and defienetly helps to destress. Using aromatherapy oils is another fantastic and very effective way of relaxing. Lavender oil has a very soothing scent and can help ease stressed nerves into sleep. It can be dabbed onto a pillow or burner on an oil burner to scent the room. Try mixing 2-3 drops in about 3 tablespoons of carrier oil such as almond oil for a massage. I would also suggest using lemon or pepper
mint just before an exam to waken up and refresh yourself. If you are having a lot of difficulty sleeping chamomile or valerian tea are something I have found helpful. The taste is fairly acquired though so its also worth trying warm milk with a little honey if you like it sweetened. The best way over all to de-stress is to take it easy and remind yourself that it ISN'T the end of the world if you fail. You can take exams again if you care that much, or just get on and do something else.

- 16/06/03 My son finished his degree course last year so he's over it now.
My daughter has just finished her's. She really went through stress overload fighting the university bureaucracy to complete her final project but in the end she came out with a 2:1.
Her solution to stress now is by lying in the garden in the sun! |
